Avon Grove junior midfielder Abby Wheble has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Delaware.

Avon Grove junior Abby Wheble has committed to Delaware

Wheble was a Third Team Ches-Mont League pick in 2010 when she helped the Devils finish 10-8 and advance to the District 1 tournament where they nearly stunned undefeated Upper Dublin in the first round.

Wheble, who plays club lacrosse for SEPA, plans to major in education and become either a math or special education teacher.

She will play for Kateri Linville, a Delaware grad in her first year as head coach of the Blue Hens. Last summer Wheble went to a camp and played for Delaware assistant coach Kristen Hopson (Radnor graduate).

“I live a half-hour from Delaware (campus at Newark) and I’ve always loved the school,” said Wheble, an Honor Roll student who was recently inducted into the National Honor Society. “They have a great program for education and a great new staff.

“My SEPA coaches played there and I had coach Hopson as my coach in the summer. There are a lot of ties to Delaware.”

Wheble, who also plays field hockey and is on Student Forum and Student Council, was named a co-captain for the 2011 season.

“I am hoping we make it farther next year in districts,” she said. “We got really close in the first round of districts last year. The Ches-Mont League is a tough league, but we’re hoping to be really competitive.”
