Haverford School senior midfielder Grove Stewart has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Harvard University.

Stewart was a key contributor on a Fords team last year that went 20-4 and tied for the Inter-Ac League championship while also winning the Inter-Ac Invitational and finishing sixth in the final Lacrosse Magazine national rankings.

Stewart is undecided on a major, but chose Harvard for its academics.

“I love the campus and the whole setting,” Stewart said. “I’m not a cold-weather guy, but I love Cambridge and I’m a 5-minute train ride from Boston.

“I looked at all the Ivy League schools except Cornell. Education played a major role in my decision.”

Stewart also liked the Crimson team chemistry.

“The guys on the team sold it for me,” he added.

Other Haverford School seniors to commit or sign with Division I programs are Chris Hupfeldt (attackman, Penn), Joe McCallion (FO/midfielder, Penn), Conor Kelly (goalie, Notre Dame), Goran Murray (LSM, Maryland), Carl Walrath (midfielder, Virginia), Brendan McGrath (midfielder, Princeton), Alex Beatty (defenseman, Princeton), Matt Walters (midfielder, Syracuse), Brent Tomlinson (attackman, Brown) and Colin Heffernan (goalie, Dartmouth). Also, five Haverford School juniors have committed to Division I colleges.

The amazing talent and depth will make the Fords a league favorite and a top-rated team in the national rankings.

“Obviously, because we have a large number of guys committed, we have a target on our backs,” said Stewart , who formerly played club lacrosse for Team HEADstrong and Competitive Edge. “I am looking forward to the season.

“We are all really close friends and as long as we don’t overlook anybody, it will be a great season.”

Stewart wished to thank the Haverford School coaches: head coach John Nostrant and assistants Travis Loving, Mark Petrone and Doug Knight as well as former assistant and current Malvern Prep coach Dave Metzbower
