University of Hartford men’s lacrosse coach Peter Lawrence and his coaching staff welcomed 10 newcomers – three from philly – to the Hawks’ roster for the upcoming 2011 season, a class that is headlined by four high school All-Americans.
The Hawks’ Class of 2014, which consists of two attackmen, four midfielders, a pair of long stick midfielders, one defenseman and one goalie, will join 30 returning student-athletes as the squad begins the quest for their first America East Championship appearance since the 2003 season.
The Philly group includes attackman Andrew Cacchio (Holy Ghost Prep), midfielder Adam Yee (Penncrest) and midfielder/face-off specialist Tate Klidonas (Emmaus).
“This group of student-athletes is off to a great start and I am confident that they will represent our program, both on and off the field, in a very positive light,” exclaimed Lawrence. “We are very excited to have these guys and their families join the Hartford lacrosse family.”
Hartford finished 4-10 last year, posting the most wins since the 2003 season. The team returns all but one starter from that squad for the 2011 season.
Andrew Cacchio • Holy Ghost Prep, Richboro, Pa. • Attack
Cacchio, a 5-11, 175-pound attackman, played four years of lacrosse at Holy Ghost Prep where he amassed 237 career points. An adidas All-American, he was twice named first team all-league and was a three-time Courier Times First Team selection. In addition to lacrosse, Cacchio played one year of high school basketball. Cacchio is enrolled in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.
Adam Yee • Penncrest, Newton Square, Pa. • Midfield
Yee played four years of lacrosse at Penncrest. The 5-9, 160-pound midfielder earned a spot on the All-Delco Second Team and was named to the All-Central Lacrosse First Team. A recipient of the Marine Corps Outstanding Athlete award, Yee was a two-year member of the wrestling team and played two years of varsity football, twice earning honorable mention All-Central League accolades. Yee is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Tate Klidonas • Emmaus, Emmaus, Pa. • Midfield
Klidonas, a decorated three sports varsity athlete from Emmaus, is a 5-10,185-pound midfielder. A two-year captain at Emmaus, he accumulated 157 career goals and 59 career assists, while helping the team to two-straight state quarterfinal appearances as a junior and senior. A three-time all-conference lacrosse honoree, Klidonas was named All-EPSLA and a United States Lacrosse All-American during his senior season. In addition to lacrosse, Klidonas played four years of high school football and was a four-year member of the wrestling team. Klidonas was a three year starter on the football team where he served as team captain during his final stint. On the wrestling mat, he racked up an impressive 105-39 career record, captained the team for two seasons and was a PIAA State qualifier. Klidonas is enrolled in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.
Justin Bentivegna • Wantagh, N.Y. • Midfield
Bentivegna comes out of Wantagh, N.Y. where he attended MacArthur High School. The 6-2, 195-pound midfielder played three years of varsity lacrosse and was tabbed all-conference. As a senior captain in 2010, Bentivegna poured in 21 goals and tacked on six assists for 27 points. In addition, he was selected to play on Naussa’s Nike Empire Team and was the recipient of the Ed Purcell Lacrosse Scholarship. Bentivegna is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Tim Engel • Buffalo Grove, Ill. • Attack/Midfield
Engel arrives at Hartford after playing lacrosse and football at Stevenson High School. A native of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Engel joins the Hawks’ attack and midfield units at 5-10 and 175-pounds. At Stevenson, he put up 180 career points, took home All-American accolades during his senior year in 2010 and was named all-conference as a junior in 2009. Engel is enrolled in the Barney School of Business.
Adam Fingar • Canandaigua, N.Y. • Defense
Fingar, a 6-4, 180-pound defender out of Canandaigua Academy, helped his team capture the Class B State Championship in 2009. The four-year member of the lacrosse team garnered Section V First Team honors as a defenseman and was selected to play in the Section V Senior Select Showcase as a senior in 2010. Fingar also played lacrosse for the Fellowship of Christian Academy (FCA) national team in 2009. In addition, the Canandaigua, N.Y. native lettered in football, cross country and track and field. Fingar is enrolled in the Barney School of Business.
Alex Matarazzo • New Fairfield, Conn. • Long Stick Midfielder
Matarazzo, Hartford’s lone newcomer from Connecticut, attended Fairfield College Preparatory School where he helped his squad to a Connecticut state championship as a junior in 2009. The 6-0, 180-pound New Fairfield native was named All-SCC and a New Haven Register All-Star in 2008. In addition, the New Fairfield, Conn. native was a three-year member of the ice hockey team. Matarazzo is enrolled in the Barney School of Business.
John Quinn • Niskayuna, N.Y. • Long Stick Midfielder
Quinn is a 5-8, 170-pound long stick midfielder who played four years of lacrosse at Niskayuna High School. Quinn captained the team, leading the Silver Warriors to the state finals in 2009 and to the state semifinals during his senior season in 2010. Quinn was named a Section 2 Second-Team All-Star and was selected to play in the Section 2 All-Star game. At Niskayuna, Quinn also lettered in football, spending two seasons with the squad. Quinn is enrolled in the Barney School of Business.
Connor Yatauro • Toms River, N.J. • Midfield
Yatauro, a 5-11, 173-pound midfielder, was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and soccer at Monsignor Donovan High School. Yatauro comes to Hartford with a long list of accolades, highlighted by All-American and Ocean County Lacrosse Player of the Year honors during his senior season in 2010. An All-Shore Conference First Team selection in 2010 and second team pick in 2009, Yatauro grabbed all-division first team honors three times during his high school career. In addition, Yatauro was invited to play in the Ocean/Monmouth All-Star game on three occasions. The Toms River, N.J. native also enjoyed a successful high school soccer career as he was named all-division first team, All-Shore Conference Second Team and was an all-state honorable mention pick. Yatauro is enrolled in the Barney School of Business.
Dan Zenevitch • Worcester, Mass. • Goalie
Zenevitch comes to Hartford from Worcester, Mass., where he starred at St. Peter Marion High School as a six-year lacrosse player. A two-year captain and two-time Telegram and Gazette Super Team selection, the 6-0, 200-pound goalie also garnered All-American accolades as a senior in 2010. Prior to his arrival at Hartford, Zenevitch was one of 96 high school graduates from around the nation invited to compete in the 2010 Champion High School Lacrosse Showcase, held in part of the ESPN Rise Games. After helping his squad to a gold medal behind a perfect 4-0 record, he was named to the All-ESPN Rise Game Team. Zenevitch was also a standout high school football player where he spent five seasons with the team at St. Peter Marion and earned spots on the Central Massachusetts and Division 1-C All-Star Teams. Zenevitch is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
