pick last year for the Friars, who tied with Haverford School for the league title. Dreyer, who plays for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club, also played in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Showcase in June and made the Fab 40 teams at the Philly Lacrosse Showcase last November.

Dreyer, who also plays football at Malvern Prep, becomes the third Philly senior to commit to Air Force. The others are defensemen Alex Warden (Garnet Valley) and Ryan Crane (Germantown Academy). This year two Philly-area freshmen are Air Force freshmen: defensemen Erik Lenke (Strath Haven) and Andrew Zaldivar (Delaware Charter School).

“I wasn’t even considering Air Force and didn’t know much about it until the coach (Eric Seremet) e-mailed me and told me to call him gave him a call at the end of the spring,” Dreyer said. “He told me about all the benefits of going to the Academy and it sounded like such a good deal that I had to find out more.

“I made my unofficial visit and saw the campus and met with some of the guys and that’s when I pretty much made my decision.. What you have to understand is that it’s the long term. Some people want instant gratification, but Air Force is about your future; it’s probably the bets choice I can make.”

Dreyer said he plans to study a math-related field such as engineering.

“The campus is absolutely beautiful and the weather is so nice,” he said. “One of the main factors was when I met with the guys on the team, I saw they are all so motivated.”

Dreyer said his teammates at Malvern also are motivated. They met with their new coach, Dave Metzbower on Thursday and he is confident the Friars will remain strong as they shoot for another Inter-Ac title.

Dreyer is the fifth Malvern Prep senior to commit to a Division I college. The others are face-off specialist Dew Kennedy (Johns Hopkins), attackman TJ Hanzsche (Navy), midfielder Vince Travaglini (Massachusetts) and attackman Mike Dougherty (St. Joseph’s). Also, junior defenseman Eddie Morris has committed to Johns Hopkins.

Metzbower, a 20-year assistant coach at Princeton, served as an assistant at rival Haverford School last year. He replaces Dan Keating, who left to become an assistant at Lehigh University after serving one year as an assistant under John McEvoy and one year as head coach.

“We were hoping that this was going to be more than a transition year with a new coach and we’ve got new hope with coach Metzbower coming in,” said Dreyer. “He wants to get a little tougher schedule and hopefully we can pull off some wins.”
