Former O’Hara standout Jansen (defenseman) will play at new D1 program in Georgia

From Press Releases and Staff Reports

Former Cardinal O’Hara standout Sam Jansen (defenseman) has transferred to Mercer University (Ga.) and is listed as a new recruit for the school’s first-year Division I program.

Jansen transferred from Dowling University, where he did not play. He was a First Team Catholic League selection in 2008 for O’Hara.

Mercer head coach Jason Childs announced Jansen as one of 14 additional incoming recruits on Wednesday. That, coupled with the team’s earlier commitments and several club team members, brings the team’s inaugural roster to 48 members.

The Bears’ team will be the first-ever NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse program in the state of Georgia.

Childs’ second wave of commitments includes six former prep players from Georgia. Among the Georgians, all of whom are freshmen this season, will be Jake Polo (Peachtree City/McIntosh H.S.), Matthew Renn (Woodstock/McCallie School), Alex Goldsberry (Marietta/Harrison H.S.), Harry Baker (Sandy Springs/North Springs H.S.), Matt Story (Norcross/Norcross H.S.), and Colin Brown (Marietta/Lassiter H.S.).

Additionally, Childs has added a pair of Tennesseans (Trevel Talley, Chattanooga/McCallie School and Alex Baird, Brentwood/Ravenwood H.S.) and one player each from Colorado (Colton Mattei, Englewood/Regis Jesuit H.S.), South Carolina (Alex Evans, Greer/Riverside H.S./Clemson U.), North Carolina (Grant Mulkey, Chapel Hill/Cedar Ridge H.S./Jacksonville U.), Illinois (Taylor Coughlin, South Elgin/St. Charles North H.S.), and Alabama (Haden Smith, Birmingham/John Carroll Catholic H.S.). Jensen, Evans, and Mulkey are junior transfers.

“I feel very good about where we are at in terms of both numbers and quality,” said Childs. “To have nearly 50 members for a start-up program is fantastic, but to have the type of skill and commitment I see in these guys is a bonus. They really are excited about their legacy in building Mercer’s lacrosse program!”
