The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse squad has announced its captains for the upcoming season. Seniors Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) as well as junior Kelly Barnes (St. Davids Pa./Radnor) were selected by their peers to lead the squad during the 2011 season.
“I’m very excited about the leadership of this year’s team,” said Hoyas coach Ricky Fried. “They’re incredibly accomplished both on and off the field and are respected by their teammates. After tallying the votes from the returners it’s clear that these are the four players that the team has chosen to represent them.”
Brophy started all 19 games last season and posted 12 goals as well as two assists for 14 points. The midfielder has been a constant since her freshman season appearing in 56 career games with 30 goals to her credit.
Kirr is a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree and will be looked at to lead the offense in the spring. She ranked third on the squad in scoring with 30 goals and 17 assists for 47 points. Kirr scored a season-best five points in the overtime victory over Loyola (Md.) and had four points in the win at Louisville. She is also a two-time Regional All-American.
McCraw was a Second Team All-American after making the move to defense this past year. As a junior she posted a team-high 32 caused turnovers which ranks among the best in program history. She led the squad in ground balls with 40 and was second in draw controls with 39. McCraw was a Second Team Regional All-American and a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree. She was also named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament squad.
Barnes, the lone junior co-captain, was a Second Team Regional All-American also after changing her role this past season. She recorded 22 caused turnovers to rank third on the squad, as well as five goals and one assist on the season for six points. She ranked third in ground balls with 28 and fourth in draw controls posting 19.
Georgetown finished the season with a record of 13-6 and a perfect 8-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as well as the tournament title for the first time in program history. Georgetown earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament marking GU’s 11th tournament bid in the past 12 seasons.
