From Press Releases and Staff Reports

The Virginia Tech athletics department has announced that head lacrosse coach Katrina Silva (Strath Haven graduate) has resigned, effective July 23, 2010, to pursue a business opportunity outside of coaching.

“We thank Katrina for her dedication to Virginia Tech and wish her well in the future,” said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics.

In her four seasons as the head coach of the Hokies, Silva posted an overall record of 22-37. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Silva was 67-57 in seven seasons as the head coach at Colgate and had an 87-94 record in 11 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

She also served as the head women’s lacrosse and field hockey coach at Roanoke College from 1996-99. She is a 1993 graduate of Towson University with a degree in physical education studies.

Assistant coach Megan Burker will serve as interim head coach for the 2010-11 academic year. Burker served as an assistant under Silva for the past four seasons. She is a 2006 graduate of Stanford University with a degree in urban studies and is currently working on her master’s degree in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech.

Silva is a 1993 graduate of Towson University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education studies, and a minor in psychology. She was the starting goalkeeper for Towson’s nationally-ranked lacrosse team for three years. During her junior campaign, the Tigers were finalists in the ECAC tournament. Silva was also the starting goalkeeper on Towson’s field hockey team for four years, and she was honored as the Southeast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

As a member of both the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and US Lacrosse Incorporated, Silva has served on several committees with the IWLCA, including the regional All-America committee, and has been a representative on US Lacrosse’s board of governors.
