Downingtown West rising senior attackman Ryan Higgins wasn’t really looking at play lacrosse at Robert Morris when he began searching for the right college.
But when Whippets teammate Tyler Rankel chose Robert Morris early in the summer, he
began reconsider. Several weeks ago, Higgins committed to the college, located just outside Pittsburgh in Moon Township.
“I wasn’t really looking at them to start off with,” said Higgins. “They sent me an e-mail one day and I visited the campus in mid-July
“I feel in love with it. I loved the coaching staff, and the team is a big family. It’s really intriguing; it’s always good to have a bunch of guys you can rely on.
“He (Rankel) had encouraged me to go; he said it be great if we could play together in college. He talked to me throughout the process. He was a big help.”
Higgins was a second-team all-Ches-Mont League choice in 2009 when he scored 35 goals and helped the Whippets finish 12-8 while advancing to the second round of the District 1 championships.
Higgins, a member of the National Honor Society, is considering a career in sports management.
Higgins also played club lacrosse this summer for Team HEADstrong and helped the Elite team place fifth at Champ Camp 20.
“Playing for team like HEADstrong helps get you exposure,” he said. “I also give a lot of credit to (Downingtown West) coach (Tommy) Hannum. He puts me in spots where I can get exposure.”
Higgins said he’s optimistic about the 2010 season. Besides Higgins and Rankel, attackman Eric Sanders has committed to Division I Albany.
“We have a great goalie (Dustin Keen) and some good players coming back,” said Higgins. “I really do think we have a good chance to push for a Ches-Mont title and make our way into the state bracket.”
Seniors can sign a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period Nov. 11-18.
