District 11 boys’ final: Emmaus repeats as champion; will face Lower Merion again in PIAA opener

Junior midfielder John McGeary’s lone goal of the game with a little over a minute to play before the half proved to be the momentum Emmaus needed Friday as the host Hornets broke away from Allentown Central Catholic and cruised to their second straight District 11 title with a 11-6 win over the Vikings.

With the win, Emmaus (15-7) advances to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs for the second year in a row against a familiar foe at a familiar site. The Hornets and District 1 fifth-place finisher Lower Merion will tangle for the second year in a row at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Allentown’s J. Birney Crum Stadium – the site of last year’s opening-round game won by the Hornets, 7-5.

Lower Merion defeated Central Bucks East, 11-10 behind Duke-recruit Jordan Wolf’s game winning-goal, his sixth of the game, in the fifth-place game played earlier Friday at Radnor.

McGeary’s seventh goal of the season with just 1:12 remaining in the second period helped Emmaus to a 6-3 lead at the break. It also proved as a spark heading into the third as the Hornets scored five third-period goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Junior Dan Kinek paced Emmaus with three goals and an assist before sitting out the entire fourth period with an injury. Seniors Will Scott and Stephen Ward added two goals and two assists while middie and face-off specialist Tate Klidonas also added a pair of goals.

The Hornets also got some good news with the return of Navy recruit Ben Sampson, who returned to the lineup after suffering a shoulder injury in practice earlier in the month. The senior scored his third goal of the season as part of the five-goal third period.

Central Catholic, which ended its season at 19-4, suffered each of its losses to Emmaus. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Gulyas had a pair of fourth period goals and an assist and fellow sophomore Matt Savage added two goals. Tyler Albanese and Adam Wydra also added a goal and an assist each.
