District 1 boys’ playbacks roundup: Hatters claim final PIAA berth with OT win over Radnor; GV downs Abington

Kyle Schwarz tallied the game-winner in the second overtime as Hatboro-Horsham finished off a comeback from a 9-6 deficit and defeated Radnor, 11-10, today in the District 1 seventh-place playback game at Bayard Rustin.

The win advances the Hatters into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs as the final District 1 qualifier. Hatboro-Horsham will meet the District 1 champion in the first round of state on Tuesday.

Eddie Coombs led the Hatters with four goals and one assist while Ryan Kreston added three goals and one assist,

Jeff Puckette led the Red Raiders with three goals and an assist while Ben Junior and Harrison Lawrence each scored three goals. Greg Cutilli added two goals.and Dino Vitale made 10 saves in goal.

Garnet Valley 12, Abington 11

The Jaguars rallied from a four-goal deficit in the last five minutes and got a game-winner from Steve Smyrl (three goals) in the final 65 seconds and earned the No. 3 seed from District 1.

The Jaguars will meet the District 3 runner-up, Manheim Township or Hempfield, in the first round of states.

Ricky Lehman also scored three goals for Garnet Valley while Mike Montella added two goals.

The Jags trailed, 11-7 with 4:42 to play and tallied four goals in less than two minutes to tie it. Lehman, Eric Warden, Jules Raucci (two goals) and Adam Mondell – who won all the key face-offs – had the goals in the surge.

Billy Neilson made 13 saves and a had a key stop in the final 15 seconds on an Abington breakaway.

Abington will play the District 12 champion, La Salle – a 7-5 winner over. Joseph’s Prep – in the first round of states.
