Scholastic girls: Friends’ Central seniors helped lead Phoenix to Friends Schools League championship

The Friends’ Central girls’ lacrosse team claimed its first Friends Schools League championship in five years Saturday by defeating defending champ and host Germantown Friends, 13-2.

The victory capped a 13-5 season for the Phoenix, who led 7-0 at halftime and avenged a 12-11 loss

to the Tigers in the regular season. Friends’ Central closed the season with five straight wins.

Gracie Pearlman led Friends’ Central against GFS with four goals, two assists and five groundballs and Ashley Tedesco added three goals, four assists and four groundballs. Emily Brodsky had two goals, four draw controls and five forced turnovers while Becca Dahle had a goal, three assists, four groundballs, one draw controls and two forced turnovers. Jaime Hyman had two goals, one assist, two draw controls, two groundballs and one forced turnover while Claire Harris scored once.

“We had a tremendous group of seniors,” aid Friends’ Central coach Lauren Becker Rubin. “We had nine total, and eight were starters until Talia East tore her ACL. They were tremendous leaders on and off the field. In our championship game against GFS, all seven of them played the best games of their careers. You can’t ask for more than that.”

Goalie Emily Belkoff had eight saves, and turned back several point blank shots in the second half against Germantown Friends. In front of her, the Phoenix defense was outstanding, forcing 28 turnovers while shutting down a potent GFS attack. The defense also started the Friends’ Central transition game and managed the clock well.

Senior Kaitlyn McCaffrey led the unit with six forced turnovers, five groundballs, and one one draw control. She had 12 forced turnovers in a semifinal win over Shipley School. Also against GDS, senior Jaime Clough had six forced turnovers, three groundballs and, two interceptions while senior Megan Holt contributed four forced turnovers and three groundballs, critical to our midfield transition. Senior Molly Boschan had two forced turnovers and several huge defensive stops in the first half.
