The host College of New Jersey lacrosse team advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Lacrosse Championships today defeating Cabrini College 17-6, in Ewing, N.J.
TCNJ (15-3) advances to play the winner of the Endicott (14-2) vs. Claremont-Mudd Scripts (15-2) game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 at Salisbury University.
Junior Alison Jaeger and sophomore Leigh Mitchell led the Lions to a dominant performance as Jaeger finished with seven goals and an assist, while Mitchell found netting three times and assisted on eight other tallies.
The Lions stormed out to an 11-4 halftime lead. Sophomore Kathleen Notos made a strong statement 13 seconds into the contest winning the draw control, charging downfield, and firing a shot just under the crossbar to take a 1-0 lead.
Cabrini answered back with a tally of its own at the 29:01 mark to knot the score at one. Senior Amanda Alexandrowicz (Ridley) found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Christina Pasquariello (Harriton).
Notos rung the bell again on a feed from Mitchell less than a minute later. After a goal by Cavalier senior Erin Nollen (Henderson) tied the game 2-2, TCNJ rattled off six unanswered goals to take control of the match.
At the 20:34 mark, Mitchell fed Jaeger on a goal to take a 3-2 advantage. It was the second assist of the game for Mitchell and 38th on the season, breaking the single-season record set by Lee Moreau in 1989.
Nollen, Alexandrowicz and Jaime O’Hanlon (Springfield-Delco) each had two goals and an assist for the Cavaliers (11-8). Danielle Rothermel (St. Hubert) scored once and Kate Schmid (St. Hubert) had nine saves.
More history followed with 8:22 remaining in the opening half. Jaeger scored her second goal of the game off a feed from Mitchell. It was the 100th point of the season for the junior, only the third player in the history of the Lions program to eclipse triple digits in a season.
This is the 26th consecutive NCAA appearance for the Lions lacrosse program. They’ve won 13 NCAA championships, winning their last title in 2006.
