Scholastic boys: Malvern Prep stuns Haverford School, 9-7, behind O’Connell, Kennedy, Jackson

Mark Jackson scored three goals, Mike Dougherty added two, Andrew O’Connell sparkled in the goal with 15 saves and Drew Kennedy played a key role at the face-off X as visiting Malvern Prep stunned Haverford School, 9-7, today in Inter-Ac League boys’ lacrosse.

The Fords (10-3 overall, 1-1 league) had entered the game with a nine-game winning streak and a ranking of No. 1 in the PA Media Rankings, Phillylacrosse.com and the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association. Haverford School also is ranked No. 6 in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Power Rankings.

The Friars (6-4, 1-2) – who had dropped their last three games – got a major boost from O’Connell, the North Carolina signee who was actually knocked out of the game for several minutes of the third period after taking a sizzling shot by junior Matt Walters (committed to Syracuse) to the ribs.

Also for Malvern Prep, junior Drew Kennedy was brilliant at the face-off X, neutralizing the Fords’ standout tandem of Liam O’Connor and Joe McCallion and winning 60 percent of his draws while also scoring a goal. Sophomore PJ Finley also was strong at the face-off X for the Friars.

Ryan Creighton added a goal and an assist for the Friars and Keith Dreyer and TJ Hanzsche each scored once.

“It’s not like we were getting blown out in the last three games,” said Malvern Prep coach Dan Keating. “We were getting a lot of shots and playing hard; the shots just weren’t falling. Today we got a couple good bounces and our kids played hard.

“We put our hats on and grabbed our lunchpails and went to work. The kids responded and played hard.

“Haverford is a great team. Now, we have Germantown Academy Thursday and Conestoga Saturday and then La Salle next Tuesday. We have no time to get big headed.”

Hup Hupfeldt scored twice for the Fords.
