D1 men’s roundup: Drexel dominates 2nd half to top St. John’s for 5th straight

The Drexel men’s lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals to end the game and defeated visiting St. John’s, 11-4, Saturday in Division I men’s lacrosse for its fifth straight win.

Robert Church led the Dragons (5-1) with three goals and one assist while Colin Ambler (Abington), Scott Perri, and Nick Trizano each had a goal and an assist. Nick Kusturiss (Penncrest) won 8 of 14 face-offs while defensemen Brian Teuber (Penn Charter) and Matt McCormick (Malvern Prep) led the defense in front of ace goalie Mark Manos (Salesianum, DE).

Teuber had two groundballs and two caused turnovers and McCormick had two groundballs and one caused turnover while Manos made nine saves and held the Red Storm scoreless over the final 34:40 of the game. Drexel’s defense held the Red Storm without a man-up goal in five attempts. The defense has now allowed seven or less goals in five straight games.

Stony Brook 16, Delaware 12

The host Blue Hens (4-2) were outscored, 9-2, in the second period in the defeat to Stony Brook (3-1). Curtis Dickson had six goals and Martin Cahill three to pace Delaware.

Yale 8, Lehigh 6

Dante Fantoni scored three goals for the Mountain Hawks (2-4) in defeat. Goalie Dan Carr (Penn Charter) made 12 saves and added an assist.

Brown 18, St. Joseph’s 4

Artie Marrapese had a goal and an assists for the host Hawks (0-7).

Duke 9, Loyola 5

Freshman goalie Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) made 12 saves as the Blue Devils (3-3) earned a needed win at Loyola’s before 6,000 fans at the grand opening of the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore.

Princeton 10, UMBC 5

Paul Barnes (Haverford School) tallied once for the Tigers (4-0).

Fairfield 10, Notre Dame 8

Clay Wells (La Salle) had two caused turnovers and a groundballs to help Fairfield (2-2) upset No. 3 Notre Dame (3-2) in South Bend. Defenseman Mike Creighton (Malvern Prep) had three groundballs and a caused turnover for the Irish.

Ohio State 11, Albany 6

James Green (Central Bucks East) and Eddie Bambino (Penn Charter) each scored once for the Buckeyes (4-2) in their win over visiting Albany (0-5).

Maryland 12, Towson 8

Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East) scored once for the Tigers (0-3).

Virginia 12, Cornell 4

Defenseman Ken Clausen (Hill School) had four groundballs and a caused turnover for the No. 1 Cavaliers (6-0) in their win over host and No. 8 Cornell (4-1).

Quinnipiac 12, Providence 2

Jack Oppenheimer (Germantown Academy) scored twice for Quinnipiac (3-1).

Rutgers 7, Penn State 4

Matt Mackrides (Malvern Prep) had a goal and assist for the visiting Nittany Lions (0-5).

Jacksonville 17, Sacred Heart 7

Jimmy Trentini (Upper Dublin) scored once for the surprising Dolphins, who are 5-3 in their first season of play.

Hofstra 14, Johns Hopkins 6

Defenseman Tucker Durkin (La Salle) had two caused turnovers and two groundballs and Kyle Wharton (Haverford School) added two assists for the No. 7 Blue Jays (4-2) in their road loss to the No. 10 Pride (2-1).
