The Penn men’s lacrosse completed a weekend sweep at the DU Face-Off Classic, defeating Air Force, 8-7, Sunday at the University of Denver’s Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Junior Corey Winkoff, who had three assists, capped off the scoring with 2:51 left, finishing a feed from sophomore John Conneely. That goal came just 32 seconds after Air Force’s Zack Carroll had tied things with his third goal of the day.
Conneely added two goals with his winning assist. Rob McMullen also scored twice for the Quakers (2-2).
Chris Casey went the distance in goal for Penn, making seven saves. On the face-off X, Justin Lynch won 14 of his 19 draws and had 12 ground balls.
Penn returns to action twice at home this weekend, hosting Saint Joseph’s Wednesday night and Villanova Saturday afternoon.
Denver 8, Lehigh 7
The Mountain Hawks lost at the DU Face-Off Classic, falling to 2-3. Brian Bienemann led Lehigh with two goals and an assist and goalie Dan Carr (Penn Charter) made seven saves.
Virginia 11, Syracuse 10
The No. 2 Cavaliers (4-0) edged the No. 1 Orange (2-1) in front of 7,501 raucous fans at UVA’s Klöckner Stadium. Senior defenseman Ken Clausen (Hill School) had five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
The last four meetings between Syracuse and Virginia in the series each have been determined by one goal, with UVa holding the 3-1 advantage during the span. The victory is also UVa’s second consecutive over Syracuse when the Orange are ranked No. 1 in the nation and the Cavaliers are No. 2. UVa topped Syracuse on Feb. 27, 2009 in the Carrier Dome 13-12 in the last meeting between the two teams.
Quinnipiac 13, Detroit Mercy 8
Jack Oppenheimer (Germantown Academy) had three goals and an assist for the winners (2-1).
Division III
Gwynedd Mercy 13, Husson 3
Freshman Dustan Mangin (Archbishop Wood) had four tallies on the day, freshmen Mason Risner added three scores and Roy Bakeoven (Archbishop Ryan) dished out three assists for the Griffins (3-0).
