Episcopal Academy senior attack/midfielder Buckley commits to Harvard University

Episcopal Academy senior attack/midfield Alexa Buckley has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Harvard University.

Buckley, an Academic All-American selection and Competitive Edge/Phillylacrosse.com Underclass Honor Roll pick last year, helped the Churchwomen go 11-1 in league play and 18-5 overall to win the Inter-Ac League championship.

A standout soccer player who spent four years in the Olympic Development program, Buckley also considered North Carolina.

“It was a tough decision,” she said. “But after my official (visit) in September, I really felt Harvard was the best fit for me. I loved the program, the girls on the team and the school. I really like the balance they have between athletics and academics.”

Under coach Lisa Miller, the Crimson went 2-5 in the Ivy League and 6-10 overall last year.

“Coach Miller is a great coach, and she’s working really hard to turn the program around,” Buckley said. “I think she’s going to do great things. They have a really impressive freshman class this season, and I love my recruiting class.”

Buckley said she is undecided on a major, but is considering English or History and is also interested in Social Entrepreneurship.

A member of the Episcopal Academy Community Service Board, Buckley was involved in Starfinder (volunteering to coach soccer and teach leadership to children from Philadelphia) for four years. She spends one night week at Bryn Mawr tutoring and is also a member of the Key Club.

Last summer, she traveled to Zambia as part of the African Education Program that tutors and aids children ages 5 to 18. She plans to return again this summer.

With Buckley joining fellow Division I recruits Avery Curley (Penn State) and Ashley McCormick (Yale), EA is gunning for its fourth sixth straight Inter-Ac title this spring.

“Even though we lost some seniors, we have a great group of girls,” Buckley said. “I think we’ll come together and that should help us contend for another championship.”
