Villa Maria Academy senior attack Chelsea Fay has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Delaware.

Fay scored 107 goals last year and led the Hurricanes to a 16-3 season and a berth in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies (AACA) championship game. Fay was an all-AACA and an Honorble Mention All-Philylacrosse.com pick for a team that reached the second round of the District 1 tournament.

Fay, a member of the National Honor Society, will study Early Childhood at the Newark campus.

“They have a really good program Delaware has basically always be my No. 1 choice,” said Fay. “I loved the school, I loved the surroundings and it’s close to home. I really liked the team and the coaches and it was the one school where I felt comfortable.”

Fay has coached youth lacrosse with her club team, SEPA.

“I always loved working with kids and it (being a teacher) has always been in the back of my mind,” she said.

Fay, also an all-league performer as a sophomore, is the sixth Philly recruit for Delaware coach Kim Ciarrocca (Plymouth Whitemarsh, Temple). The others are Shannon Burns (Springfield-Delco), Bridget Burns (Notre Dame), Abbie Hartman (North Penn), Casey Rooney (Merion Mercy) and Liz Wilson (Abington).

“I know Bridget and Casey and Shannon from playing against them,” said Fay.

Fay played for the Philly 2 team last year at the National Tournament and also was on the Philly Under Armour Underclassmen squad in 2008. She heads into the 2010 season with 224 career goals and 78 assists.

Fay acknowledges that the Hurricanes have some rebuilding to do this year after losing a large group of seniors.

“We did lose most of the starters and they were great,” she said. “They were so team-oriented and many of them went off to play in college. This will be a growing year. We’re going to be young, but we’re going to be decent. We’ll welcome the new girls and go from there.”
