Men’s recruit: Hill School senior goalie Himes signs with Providence College

Hill School senior goalie Tyler Himes has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at Providence College.

Himes, of Spring City, was an Honorable Mention All-Mid Atlantic Prep League choice in 2009 for The Hill. In two years as a starter, Himes has posted a 7.1 goals against average and a 60 percent save percentage while averaging approximately 150 saves a year.

An Honor Roll student, Himes will serve as captain for The Hill in 2010. Last summer Himes played on the Twist Black squad that advanced to the quarterfinals at Champ Camp. He also made the All-Star Game at the Top 205 camp.

“Providence is the capital of (Rhode Island) and it’s a beautiful city,” Himes said. “Coach (Chris) Burdick is a great guy and the guys in the team were great. The campus is beautiful, I can’t say enough about it.”

A starter since his sophomore year, Himes also lettered three years for the Hill football team. This year he played tight end and defensive end for a squad that went 8-1 and won the Mid-Atlantic title.

Himes, who has been playing goalie since eighth grade, said the Blues will be young in 2010, but he’s optimistic the team will be successful.

“We are going to be a young team, but we have four key senior captains and we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “We lost a lot of senior starters, but we’re going to be ready to play.

“I feel like I really have to step up. In other years I was on teams that had great players on defense. We are going to be pretty raw on defense this year, so I not only have to be the quarterback on defense but at the same time I will have to be the best defender out there.”
