    Springfield-Delco senior long stick midfielder Joe Addona has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at St. John’s University.

    Addona was an Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association and a first-team Central League choice in 2009 when he helped the Cougars reach the PIAA semifinals. Addona also was a Second Team All-Phillylacrosse.com pick in 2009 that played on the Philly team which placed third in the Under Armour Underclassmen games.

    Addona, who plans to major in Marketing, said he liked the Queens, N.Y., campus and the proximity to Manhattan. He also will room with close friend and Springfield-Delco teammate Colin Keegan.

    “I wanted to be near the city,” Addona said. “In Queens, you’re right near Manhattan, and the campus is really nice. It was surprising; everyone said Queens isn’t that great. But the campus really is.”

   Keegan and Addona are two of five Springfield-Delco seniors to commit to Division I colleges. Defenseman Brendan Nave and goalie Austin Kaut have signed with Penn State and midfielder Josh Cavanaugh has committed to Navy.

    Last year the Cougars went 19-6, tied for second place in the Central League and reached the District 1 semifinals. Most of the starting lineup returns and the senior class is loaded with talent and experience.

    “We’ve been working since the beginning of September, the month after Champ Camp,” said Addona. “We’ve been in the weight room and the gym and everyone is starting to get the feeling that this is the year we’re really going to do something. We really want to win the Central League.

    “We’ve been together since elementary school and everyone in the community said if we stuck together, we’d be pretty good. Everyone has been waiting for our senior year. We’ve got to prove to everyone we’re for real.”
