Shipley School junior midfielder Julius Mouser has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Rutgers University.

Mouser had 55 goals and 28 assists for the Gators in 2009, leading the team to a 17-3 record and the Friends Schools League championship. He recently competed in the Philly Lacrosse Showcase where he made the Fab Forty Junior All-Star Game.

Mouser was a First team Friends School League and Honorable Mention All-Phillylacrosse.com pick in 2009 as Shipley set a school record for wins in a season.

The Havertown native will play for coach Jim Stagnitta. He chose Rutgers over Drexel.

“The campus has a great atmosphere and the athletic programs are amazing and have so much support,” said Mouser. “I watched a practice there and the team is so organized and it likes quick transitioning. I like quick transition teams.”

Mouser also collected 20 goals and 12 assists in 2008 and has attended the Top 205 lacrosse camp the past two summers while also playing for the LB3 Club Lacrosse Team. In 2009 Mouser was also selected to the Maverik Showcase All-Star Game.

Mouser is also a member of the USA Field Hockey Men’s Olympic Development Team. he made the squad as a 14-year-old after making the U-19 team as a 13-year-old.

“My sisters were All-American field hockey players at Drexel,” Mouser said of older siblings Amanda and Casey. “I started playing when I was in 5th grade. I enjoyed watching them play and I picked up their skills. My mom asked me if I wanted to go further.”

Mouser has been invited to play with the National team this February at a tourney in Mexico.

Shipley School coach and athletic director Mark Duncan said Mouser has the skills to succeed at the Division I level.

“Julius has developed into one of the top junior midfielders in not just the Philadelphia area but for his recruiting class on a national level,” said Duncan. “He is a versatile player who can be a factor anywhere on the lacrosse field and I know he will make the transition to Division I lacrosse and be a fine college player.”

Mouser is excited about his team’s chances of defending their league title in 2010.

“I think we’ll have a good team,” he said. “We’ll have a really good offense and we’ll have a younger group on defense. But we will work with it.”
