Great Valley senior midfielder Colleen O’Malley has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Louisville.
O’Malley scored 61 goals and was a second-team All-Ches-Mont League and Honorable Mention All-Phillylacrosse.com pick in 2009, helping the Patriots reach the second round of districts.
O’Malley also earned All-Tournament honors for PA Express in the annual Vail Shootout. She is one of two Philly seniors to sign with Louisville; the other is Ridley’s Kelsey Garraty.
O’Malley, who also plays soccer and basketball, plans to major in Sports Administration or Early Childhood education.
“When I went down I really enjoyed the coach (Kellie Young),” said O’Malley. “I thought she would be someone I could play for, and when I met some of the girls on the team it seemed I could fit in well with them.”
Louisville enters just its third season of play in 2010, as a member of the Big East Conference. Last year the Cardinals went 10-7 and were a solid 3-4 in the conference.
“I am excited to go to a new team, one that is new enough that we won’t be intimidated by the big schools,” O’Malley said. “We want to make a name for ourselves and go out and win.”
O’Malley, who has been starting since freshman year for Great Valley, is also optimistic about her senior year. She believes the Pats – who reached the second round of the District 1 tournament last year after reaching the Class AA finals in 2008 – have the talent to contend for district honors.
“I want us to get back there,” she said. “We have been working real hard in the off-season and we hope to contend again.”
