It was a strong year for Philly freshmen in the college ranks. Phillylacrosse.com recaps these freshmen women that played regularly in 2009 at the Division II level.
East Stroudsburg’s Laura Riegel (Spring-Ford) was a first team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) selection on defense. Riegel also received Division II All-Rookie honors for the 2009 season from the WomensLacrosse.com group. Riegel ranked 17th in the nation in Division II with 3.2 ground balls per game and led the Warriors with 55 ground balls, ranked second with 17 caused turnovers and third with 27 draw controls while starting all 17 games.
New Haven’s Sarah Magnone (Villa Joseph Marie) had 38 goals.
Philadelphia University’s Taylor Peltzer (Archbishop Wood) had 41 goals and seven assists to help the Rams win the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference championship. She also was a first-team all-conference pick.
Philadelphia University defender Andi Saracco (Boyertown) started 16 games and had 27 groundballs to help the Rams win the CACC title.
Bloomsburg’s Allie Kakareka (Spring-Ford) had 31 goals and eight assists for 39 points.
Bloomsburg’s Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) had 16 goals and 18 assists for 34 points.
Bloomsburg’s Lindsay Kupferschmidt (Coatesville) had 14 groundballs in 16 games.
Millersville’s Katie Moatz (Boyertown) had 32 groundballs in 16 games.
Millersville’s Brittany Long (Henderson) had 25 goals.
IUP’s Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) had 64 draw controls and 19 goals.
Shippensburg goalie Meghan Kearney (Springfield-Delco) was 9-8 with 121 saves
Holy Family goalie Melissa Jenkins (Interboro) made 192 stops for the first-year team.
Holy Family defender Samantha Smith (St. Hubert) had 16 groundballs in 14 starts.
Kutztown’s Leeann Pica (Neshaminy) scored 25 goals.
Kutztown defender Samantha Crist (Potsttown) started all 16 games and had 47 groundballs and 27 caused turnovers.
Kutztown’s Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) had nine goals and 18 groundballs in 10 starts.
