Abington rising senior Elizabeth Wilson has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Delaware in 2010-11.

Wilson, who was a second-team All-Suburban One National pick at defense in 2009, plans to major in Elementary Education at Delaware.

“I work at day camp and I’ve always loved working with kids,” she said. “At the end of the day it’s great to know that I’ve helped someone.”

Wilson, who has spent time at Delaware camps over the past few years, chose the school because of its location and her involvement in its lacrosse programs.

“I chose Delaware because it’s pretty close to home and I’ve always done the summer camps and the tournaments in the fall,” she said. “The staff is very welcoming and I feel like I could fit in down there.”

Wilson was a key cog on Abington’s Suburban One National Conference champions in 2009.  She collected 52 groundballs, tying for tops on the team, and 21 caused turnovers. She also earned Academic All-American honors.

Wilson credits Abington coach Julie Martinez for her accomplishments in the sport.

“She made me the player that I am and I am thankful that she encouraged me to continue to work hard to become a better player,” she said.

Wilson acknowledges that Abington’s biggest struggle was to find a way to work as a team. After a rough beginning, the Ghost hit their stride with determination and adamant coaching.

“Our season started out bumpy but Coach Martinez always pushed us and told us we could do our best and we came through as a team,” Wilson said.

In 2010, Wilson will join North Penn rising senior Abbie Hartman at Delaware.

Wilson sees lacrosse as an integral part of her future and is excited to compete at a higher level, stating, “I just can’t see myself stopping after high school.”
