Lower Merion rising senior Ahmad Zachary recently made a verbal commitment to play for University of Vermont in 2010-11.

Zachary, a midfielder who was Honorable Mention All-Central League, is excited for the unique experience and opportunities at the Burlington campus.

“I’m looking forward to the overall experience of getting a great education, traveling the country, and playing against top schools,” he said.

Zachary, who is undecided on a major, is enthusiastic about the young coaching staff, led by Ryan Curtis, and how he can contribute to the team.

“UVM is a growing program and the fact that they have a young staff really attracted me to the school,” he said. “I chose Vermont because I can see myself having an impact.”

While Zachary is eager to play for Vermont, he is focused on improving for his senior year. He used a tireless work ethic to help Lower Merion (17-6) reach the district and state playoffs.

“Even though we ended up losing in the state playoffs last year (to Emmaus), I’d still say the season was successful because I feel that I improved as a player,” he said. “To me, if you set goals you have to achieve them no matter how the outside world measure success.”

This summer, Zachary will play for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club.
