Scholastic wrap: Merion Mercy wins AACA crown; Haverford School clinches tie for Inter-Ac

Kimmy Keating collected five goals and three assists and Sarah Hospodar was a key in draw controls as Merion mercy defeated Villa Maria Academy, 15-14, Saturday in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship game.

The Bears (14-4), who dethroned the Hurricanes, staved off a late Villa (15-2) charge after holding a five-goal lead in the second half.

Casey Rooney notched three goals and four assists for Merion while Emily Corcoran added three goals and an assist. Freshman goalie Caili Guilday had seven saves, including several clutch stops in the second half when Villa made its comeback attempt.

Boys

Haverford School 12, Germantown Academy 5

Liam O’Connor scored three goals and Will Horrocks added two goals and two assists as the Fords (14-8, 6-2) clinched at least a tie for the Inter-Ac League championship. Haverford is one-half game ahead of Malvern Prep (5-2), which must defeat Germantown Academy Tuesday to force a tie.

Greg Shildkrout and Beau Jones each scored twice for the Patriots.

Malvern Prep 5, Penn Charter 4

JK Poirier scored two goals, including the game-winner as the Friars (8-8) stayed one-half behind Haverford School in the race for the Inter-Ac crown.

Unionville 14, Downingtown West 6

Richard Kaiser’s four goals gave the Indians (11-4, 8-2) sole possession of second place in the Ches-Mont League.

After Unionville led only 3-2 in the first period, the Indians scored five goals in the second period – two by defenseman Joe Lisicky – to break open the game and take an 8-3 halftime lead.

Jamie Raezer scored three goals for the Whippets.

Emmaus 13, Bishop Shanahan 1

Tate Klidonas had four goals and Mic Debellis added three while Will Scott had two goals and six assists to help the Green Hornets finish their regular season at 14-4.

Hill School 11, Portledge (NY) 4

Hill wrapped up its season at 5-8 with a convincing win. PJ Mara poured in six goals for Hill while Eric Davidheiser posted five assists.

Archbishop Wood 10, Lansdale Catholic 6

The Vikings (10-4, 5-0) claimed the Catholic League North victory over the Crusaders (12-3, 4-1) to set up a showdown Tuesday at No. 1 La Salle (4-0 league). LC plays at La Salle Monday.

Episcopal Academy 17, Chestnut Hill Academy 5

The Churchmen finish their regular season 13-7 and will finish no worse than third in the Inter-Ac League.

Father Judge 19, Conwell Egan 7

Perkiomen School 5, Valley Forge 3
