The No. 2-seeded Philadelphia University women’s lacrosse team won the inaugural Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Lacrosse Championship Sunday, 11-9, knocking off the #1 seeded Georgian Court University Lions on Sunday afternoon in Lakewood, N.J.
The Lady Rams (10-7) had dropped their two previous meetings to GCU (15-3) this season.
This time, junior midfielder Kathleen Maurer scored the game-winner with 7:38 remaining in the second half, and Caribeth Shappell added an insurance goal at 4:44 as the Lady Rams held on for the championship victory.
Shappell was named CACC Tournament ‘MVP’ for her efforts, while teammates sophomore midfielders Michelle O’Hanlon (Springfield-Delco) and Danielle Coffaro along with freshman attacker Taylor Peltzer (Archbishop Wood) earned All-Tournament honors.
For the contest, both Peltzer and Maurer had three goals, while Coffaro and O’Hanlon added one apiece. Katherine Sullivan made 10 saves in goal.
The Lady Rams’ championship win was the first for the program as well as first-year head coach George Chis-Luca.
In the semifinals Saturday, Philadelphia defeated No. 3 Chestnut Hill, 16-7, as Shappell and O’Hanlon each scored three goals and Peltzer, Maurer and Coffaro added two each. Maryanne Glass had three goals for Chestnut Hill (9-8).
West Chester is ousted in PSAC championship game by Lock Haven, 13-10
Sixth-ranked West Chester University dropped the PSAC championship game to fourth-ranked and tournament host Lock Haven Saturday as Amber Hoch (Souderton) scored five goals.
The Bald Eagles’ win ended four years of frustration in the conference finals of losing to the Golden Rams. Lock Haven (16-3) had lost to West Chester (14-3) in each of the past three years on the road. Hoch had three goals in the first five minutes of play as the Eagles went to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. They led, 13-7, late in the second half until WCU scored several goals to make it closer.
West Chester must now wait until Sunday, May 3 when the 2009 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse tournament field is announced to see if it will make its unprecedented eighth trip to the NCAAs. This year, the field has expanded to six teams with a first-round game to be played on May 9.
Jackie Baker (Penncrest) scored four goals, and Chrissy Stokes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored three times and added an assist to lead West Chester’s offensive effort. Gina DiDomenicis and Nicole Haines (Great Valley) also tallied for the Golden Rams, who defeated Mercyhurst, 10-8, Friday in the semifinals.
