Archbishop Carroll’s Mauer has the school spirit for George Mason

Archbishop Carroll senior attacker Maggie Mauer has signed a letter of intent to play next year at George Mason.

Mauer, who is planning to major in engineering, said she compared the school spirit at George Mason to that at Carroll.

“I love the school atmosphere,” she said. “The team was so cool, and I saw that the college had great school spirit. Carroll also has great school spirit; everybody goes to the games. I was looking for the same in college, and I wanted it big and far away.”

Mauer plans to major in business or engineering.

For now, though, she will focus on helping Carroll shoot for its ninth straight Catholic League championship. The Patriots also are gearing for their first year in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). This year the PIAA will hold a state tournament for the first time.

“I am so excited,” she said. “I have been going to see the (Carroll) basketball team get to go on. Before, you’d just win the Catholic League and that would be it.

“Now we can go on to play even more competitive lacrosse. Coming off last year’s season, our seniors want to prove themselves just as much as last year.”

Mauer said the Carroll coaches, led by head coach Lorraine Beers, and past players have set a standard that keeps the program – which has no official feeder system – on top.

“It really comes down to coaching,” Mauer said. “I started (playing) freshman year and I learned everything from coach Beers. The team is so self-driven from all the people who come before us.

“You want to be, just like them. The coaching is awesome and you want to work harder each day.”
