Women’s recruit: Merion Mercy’s Corzel chooses Long Island and Hofstra University

Merion Mercy Academy senior defender Emily Corzel has signed a letter of intent to play next year at Hofstra University.

Corzel, an all-league choice in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies (AACA) last season, liked the business school and the location of Hofstra on Long Island.

“I am pretty sure I’ll be studying business and that’s exciting,” she said. “I liked the whole family atmosphere at Hofstra. A lot of the girls on the team are sisters and the coaches were great.

“They really welcome you. And I love the location, on Long Island. It’s close to the city and there is a lot of diversity there.”

Corzel will be joining two other Philly seniors who have signed with Hofstra – Lauren Chandler of Springfield-Montco and Casey Kellogg of Downingtown West

“I didn’t know them before, but I am really good friends with them now,” Corzel said. “We all met on our official visits.”

Corzel also is excited about the start of the season. The Bears should contend with defending champion Villa Maria Academy for AACA honors, and they hope to make a push in the District 1 playoffs,

“I think we’re going to have a great team,” she said. “We have a real athletic bunch this year.

“We’re expecting to be competing with Villa again for the championship. Hopefully, we’ll take it back. And we want to do well in districts and make the state playoffs. Our field hockey and volleyball teams made it to the state finals and it was really great for the school.”
