Women’s recruit: West Chester East’s Metzger-Bailey chooses La Salle

West Chester East senior midfielder Audrey Metzger-Bailey has signed a letter of intent to play next year at La Salle University.

Metzger-Bailey, an honorable mention All-Ches-Mont League National Conference pick last year, liked La Salle’s co-operating program in marketing and business.

“You get two co-ops in four years,” she said. “You have to take some extra classes along the way, but and you still graduate on time. One co-op is in the summer and then the next year it’s in the summer and the fall.”

Metzger-Bailey is one of six Philly women who signed with La Salle for 2009-2010. The main reason has been the presence of new coach Candace Taglianetti.

“The opportunity came at the perfect time,” Metzger-Bailey said. “I like a school in Philadelphia and it sounded like a great program where I felt I could fit in. She is building a whole new team”

Metzger-Bailey has dealt with being on a “whole new team.” Two years ago she was a deep sophomore reserve on an East team that won the District 1 championship. But last year the Vikings dealt with mass graduation and struggled through a 4-15 season.

This year’s team, according to Metzger-Bailey, should be much improved.

“We had a rough year last year,” she said. “We played mostly underclassmen last year, and a lot of sophomore and freshmen that had never played in a varsity game.

“But now we have pretty much the same team and there is a lot of potential.”
