Phoenixville’s (Umbach) Bokker announces recruits at Stanford

January 8, 2009 by Chris Goldberg

Stanford first-year coach Amy (Umbach) Bokker – a Phoenixville High graduate – has announced that seven recruits have signed for the 2010 year.

One of them is from California, Jacqueline Candelaria of Encinitas. Unilt now, only one player from the home state – Kim Cahill of Stockton (2000-2004) – has ever played a prominent role at Stanford.

Candelaria joins Elizabeth Adam (Severna Park, Md.), Carolyn Bradley (Short Hills, N.J.), Amanda Hechinger (Washington, D.C.), Jennifer Lang (Morristown, N.J.), Kathryn Newhouse (Alexandria, Va.), and Ryan O’Shea (McLean, Va.) in first-year coach Bokker’s first recruiting class.

“Overall, what was most important for us was trying to get people that would fit in well with what we’re doing and with the girls on the team,” Bokker said. “And they all are a great fit.”

Candelaria, a midfielder from La Costa Canyon High School, was a 2008 U.S. Lacrosse honorable mention All-America and Academic All-American. She has led the Mavericks to two CIF San Diego Section titles and was the tournament Most Valuable Player each time, earning first-team all-section honors. Candelaria, who carries a 4.2 grade-point average, also plays field hockey and soccer.

Stanford (12-8 in 2008) is a four-time defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament champion and finished last season ranked No. 18 by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Bokker spent her last 11 years as coach at George Mason. Bokker was a tri-sport star at Phoenixville High School, where she prepped as an All-American (1991) lacrosse player as a senior. She was also an all-area selection in field hockey as well as a four-year national swimmer.
