James Green (Central Bucks East/Ohio State rising junior) scored his third goal of the game with 47 seconds remaining in the first overtime to help the United States finish a miraculous comeback from a five-goal deficit with less than seven minutes to play and stun Canada, 16-15, in the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 World Championship Sunday at Coquitlam, British Columbia.

The U.S. improved to 4-0 in the tournament and kept alive its all-time unbeaten record, moving to 33-0 since the event was first played in 1988.

Canada poured in nine goals in the thrid quarter to take a 14-7 lead entering the final quarter of play. The U.S. sliced the lead to four early in the quarter, but Kiel Matisz gave Canada a 15-10 lead with 9:52 remaining in regulation.

The U.S. ripped off five straight goals, tying the game with 26 seconds remaining on Craig Dowd’s (East Northport, N.Y./Northport/Georgetown) fifth goal of the fourth quarter.

U.S. goalie Adam Ghitelman (Syosset, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor/Virginia) went the distance in goal and made 24 saves, including five in the two overtime periods. Dowd’s five goals led the U.S. while Jack McBride (Madison, N.J./Delbarton/Princeton) each added three.

Face-off specialist Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep/Johns Hopkins rising sophomore) won 15 of 29 draws.

The victory clinched a spot in the semifinals (July 10) for the U.S. The Americans wrap up pool play today with a game against England at 12:45 p.m. (Pacific time).
