Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/14/23 – From Press Release
On Saturday April 29, the 11th annual Play for the As event will be held at Ridley High School in Folsom. The event was created in 2013 by Ridley coach Jef Hewlings when he was head coach at Strath Haven. It fully supports families in our local area who provide care to loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that slowly destroys thinking and memory skills. It is currently the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. (now affecting over 6 million Americans) and the 3rd leading cause of death among older people (behind only heart disease and cancer).
During the event’s first 10 years, PFAs has raised over $133,000 to support caregivers whose lives are turned “upside down” by the demands of 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year care of their loved one. PFAs works directly with The Community’s Foundation (home office in Springfield PA) to allocate financial resources to families in our area who show a financial need for funding, and we have received countless, heartwarming thanks from these families for the support we have been able to provide through these efforts.
This year’s event features 4 varsity HS games:
10:00 am – Springfield-Delco vs. Owen J. Roberts (boys)
12:00 pm – Ridley vs. Kingsway Regional (NJ) (boys)
2:00 pm – Ridley vs. Chichester (girls)
4:00 pm – Strath Haven vs. Avon Grove (boys)
With the cost of home care continuing to rise, please consider a donation to PFAs that will help us continue to provide for families seeking assistance.
For those that wish to contribute to the effort, secure donations can be made directly to PFAs through TCF at http://weblink.donorperfect.com/PlayfortheAs
At last year’s event, Hewlings was able to have conversations with players from several teams who have experienced Alzheimers’ first hand through family illness, and in each case, the player expressed sincere appreciation for his/her chance to participate and for what the organization is doing to ease the burden of care of families affected by Alzheimers. If your family, or one that you know, might be able to benefit from the resources provided through PFAs, please reach out and I will gladly put you (or them) in touch with our TCF representatives to begin the application process for funding through TCF..
