Patriot League Men’s Coach’s Poll: Lehigh’s Sisselberger (South Lehigh) is FO Specialist of Year

The Boston University Terriers men’s lacrosse team – coached by Malvern Prep grad Ryan Polley – has been selected as the 2023 Patriot League men’s lacrosse preseason favorite with 127 points and 15 first-place votes. The Terriers also had three student-athletes garner major award accolades, while Lehigh earned one award when honors were announced on Wednesday.

Loyola Maryland earned the second spot in the poll with 105 points and one first-place vote, while Navy tallied two first-place votes to go with 92 points. Army West Point placed fourth with 87 points as Lehigh followed with 84 points to round out the top five. Bucknell earned 54 points for sixth place, followed by Colgate (46), Lafayette (37), and Holy Cross (16).

BU senior attack Vince D’Alto was named the 2023 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Teammate senior long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer earned preseason defensive player of the year, and graduate student goalkeeper Matt Garber was named preseason goalkeeper of the year.

Lehigh senior faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger (Southern Lehigh) rounded out the major awards as the preseason faceoff specialist of the year.

Boston U led the way with six players on the 16-member preseason all-league team: D’Alto, Meyer, Garber, graduate student attack Timmy Ley, graduate student midfielder Jake Cates, and senior defender Patrick Morrison.

Army, Lehigh, Loyola, and Navy all placed two players on the all-league team, while Bucknell and Lafayette placed one apiece.

Black Knights’ junior midfielder Jake Morin and sophomore defender AJ Pilate, Lehigh’s Sisselberger and junior midfielder Scott Cole, Loyola graduate student defender Cam Wyers and graduate student short-stick defensive midfielder Payton Rezanka, and Navy senior midfielder Patrick Skalniak and junior defender Jackson Bonitz all earned a spot on the preseason team.

Bucknell sophomore attack Connor Davis and Lafayette junior attack Peter Lehman (Council Rock North) round out the 16-member preseason all-league squad.

The preseason poll and individual awards were voted on by the men’s lacrosse coaches and sports information directors from each institution, with restrictions on voting for their team and student-athletes.

Vince D’Alto, Boston University, Sr., A, Northport, N.Y./Kings Park
* D’Alto set career highs in goals (45), assists (30) and points (75) as he led the Terriers in both goals and points last year.
* His 2.65 goals per game and 4.41 points per game were ranked third and fourth, respectively, last season in the Patriot League.
*He became just the third player in 25 years at BU to tally 14 points in a game on seven goals and seven assists against Lafayette last season.

2023 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Roy Meyer, Boston University, Sr., LSM, Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade
* Meyer posted 81 ground balls and a team-leading 58 caused turnovers in 17 games last season.
* Meyer, the reigning League defensive player of the year, led the nation in caused turnovers and caused turnovers per game (3.41) last year.
* In last season’s Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game Meyer matched a program record with six caused turnovers and set a career-high with 17 ground balls in the 14-10 win over Army.

2022 Season Awards: Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, All-Patriot League First Team member, Inside Lacrosse First Team All-American, USILA First Team All-American; Four-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, Patriot League All-Tournament Team

2023 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Faceoff Specialist of the Year
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Gr., FO, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger won 226-of-360 faceoffs for Lehigh for a .628 winning percentage, good for third in the nation.
* The graduate student finished second in Division I in groundballs per game with 9.40.
* He holds the NCAA, the Patriot League and Lehigh’s record for faceoff percentage in a season (.795) in 2021.
* Sisselberger also holds both Lehigh’s and the League’s record for groundballs in a season (160).

* In 17 appearances in goal, Garber finished his senior year with 200 total saves, a .536 save percentage and a 10.41 goals-against average.
* The goalkeeper’s save percentage, saves per game (11.76) and GAA all ranked third in the Patriot League.
* He also picked up 51 ground balls last season for the Terriers.
* Garber heads into this season with an 18-8 career record, a 10.21 goals-against average and a .546 save percentage.
