Springfield-Delco rebounded from a heartbreaking loss night by topping visiting Downingtown West, 8-5, Monday in non-league boys’ action.
The Cougars (6-2) had fallen, 6-5, on Friday to two-time defending Central League and PIAA 3A champion Radnor, a team ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com and No. 1 in the PA State Rankings in 3A. But on Monday the Cougars got three goals and an assist from freshman Luke Valerio and won 14 of 15 faceoffs while using its staunch defense to earn the win.
“It felt great to get right back at it after a tough loss to a good Radnor squad,” said junior faceoff specialist Lucas Aaron, who won 12 of 13 faceoffs for the Cougars. “We just go out and give it 100% and just get better every day.”
Ty Gougler had two goals and an assist and Jimmy Kennedy contributed a goal and two assists for Springfield. Sean Donaldson and Aidan Kreydt each scored once and Jackson Kennedy posted five saves in goal.
“It was a good win for the team but can’t lose sight of our next game (today vs. Lower Merion) and what’s in front of us,” said senior defenseman Nick Labutis. “The game plan was same as always to get out and play with energy and play our game as best we can.”
Bryson Kolinsky had two goals and an assist and Conor Sweeney tallied twice and Bo Horvath added a goal, four groundballs and three caused turnovers while Brayden Quinn posted 14 saves for the Cougars. Downingtown East (6-2) has lost two straight games, but remains undefeated (5-0) in the Ches-Mont League.
Lucas said Springfield’s success is based upon building off each day.
“We don’t worry about the long term goals,” he said. “We just focus on what’s in front of us and getting better game to game.”
