St. Joe’s women’s coach Kahoe announces newcomers to roster for 2023 season; many from Philly

As the 2023 Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse season rapidly approaches, head coach Alex Kahoe (Agnes Irwin) introduced 13 new members of the roster.

The composition of the incoming players in the upcoming season has 10 freshmen, a sophomore and a pair of graduate transfers donning the Crimson and Gray. Of the 13, seven are slated to compete in the attack, four midfielders, a defender and a goalkeeper.


FRESHMEN
BRAEDEN ARKLESS
Defense | Freshman | Houston, Texas
Background: Graduate of The Kinkaid School in Houston…As a senior, helped her team to an 11-2 record while earning All-State and All-SPC conference honors…also earned All-State honors as a junior…helped team to a 3-0 start prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020…earned the SPC championship in her freshman season en route to a 17-1 record…was also an All-SPC selection in basketball, lettering on the court in three seasons…has a sister that plays lacrosse for UC Davis.

REGAN BESTICK
Goalkeeper | Freshman | Fredericksburg, Va.
Background: Was a multi-sport athlete at Chancellor High School, excelling in field hockey, softball and basketball…played in goal for her field hockey squad, earning First Team All-State honors, twice First Team All-Area, a three-time First Team All-Region and All-District selection, and a 2018 state champion…earned All-District First Team honors on the diamond as well…was named “Queen of the Crease” at the 2021 Apex Fall Goalie Showcase …was a Team Virginia member of the 2021 Athletes Unlimited Futures and the 2021 US Lacrosse National Tournament…her mother played lacrosse at James Madison and her twin sister is a member of the George Mason women’s lacrosse team.

ALEXA CAPOZZOLI
Attack | Freshman | Episcopal Academy/Ridley Park, Pa.
Background: Had an outstanding senior season prior to graduating from Episcopal Academy…earned All-American and Academic All-American honors after helping lead her team to a 19-2 record, tallying 88 points with 56 goals and 32 assists on the season…also earned First Team All-Delco, First Team All-Inter-Ac honors…was chosen as the Inter-Ac Player of the Year and Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year…was selected as a USA Lacrosse All-American and named to the All-PASLA Team…helped Episcopal Academy win the Inter-Ac outright…scored over 100 goals over her career despite not playing her sophomore season due to the COVID-19 pandemic…had 90 points as a junior, adding 58 goals and 32 assists to her name…earned her first All-American and Academic All-American honors as a junior while selected to the Inter-Ac First Team and named Second Team All-Delco…also lettered in soccer three years, earning All-Delco Honorable Mention honors…follows in her father’s footsteps, who played lacrosse on Hawk Hill…comes from a family of collegiate lacrosse players, her mother competing at Massachusetts in college…has a pair of aunts who played at Penn State and Virginia and an uncle that played at Rutgers.

KATE FUHRMAN
Attack | Freshman | Fulton, Md.
Background: Graduate of Glenelg Country School…earned starting spot on the varsity team in attack before suffering season-ending injury…also earned starting spot in attack in 2021…played club for M&D 2022 Black for five years…helped Glenelg to a 17-2 record in her senior season…team played in the championship game of the IAMM Lacrosse State Championships.

RILEY MILLER
Attack | Freshman | Bethel Park, Pa.
Background: Graduate of Bethel Park High School…was selected as a USA Lacrosse All-American in her senior year, also earning First Team All-Conference honors…lettered all four seasons, earning second team all-conference honors as a junior…competed in a variety of sports for Bethel Park, earning three letters in basketball, two in golf and one in cross country…earned the USMC Distinguished Athlete Award.


EMMA RAINES
Attack | Freshman | Twin Valley/Elverson, Pa.
Background: Graduate of Twin Valley High School…compiled a 62-11 record…3x All-County First Team and 2x All-American Central PA honors, 2x All-Phillylacrosse.com Central PA Girls Team selection…broke the record for her high school and county for goals in a season and career…won the county championship and district championship before falling in the state championship in her senior season to finish as runner up…was part of the Under Armor 150…was on the Lacrosse Magazine National Watchlist 2020…also lettered twice in field hockey, earning All-Academic Team honors in 2020.

EMILY SMITH
Attack | Freshman | Springfield-Montco/Flourtown, Pa.
Background: Graduate of Springfield Township High School…was a captain in her senior year, earning second team all-league honors…grabbed her first accolades as a rookie, making third team all-league…also lettered all four years in basketball and soccer, a captain for both her basketball team and soccer team in her senior season…younger sister of SJU graduate and lacrosse player Lindsey Smith.

SOPHIE STANISLAWCZYK
Midfield | Freshman | Gov. Mifflin/Mohnton, Pa.
Background: Graduate of Governor Mifflin High School…a three-time letterwinner and a two-time captain…was a two-time All-County selection, All-Phillylacrosse.com Central PA and USA All-American Team selection… helped her team to their first ever district championship game…led the team to county championship game in 2021…2020 Nike Elite 120 selection…2020 All-American 2022 Junior Spotlight Team selection…also lettered three times in field hockey, receiving 2022 All-Division accolades.

KAYLYN WILLIAMS
Midfield | Freshman | Langley, British Columbia
Background: Graduate of R.E. Mountain Secondary School…did not play lacrosse for her school since they didn’t have a lacrosse team, but was on the volleyball team that became Eastern Valley Champions…played three years for the Fusion West club team for former Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse assistant coach Kevin Crawley.

ELLIE WEBB
Midfield | Freshman | Charlotte, N.C.
Background: 2022 USA Lacrosse High School All-American…earned Weddington HS Player of the Year after helping her team to a 19-4 record, registering 48 goals and 35 assists with 202 ground balls…earned First Team All-State and All-District honors as a junior and senior…helped her team to a 17-2 record in her junior season…also lettered in soccer and track and field in her high school career.

2021 (at Millersville):
Appeared in all 11 games and started 10 in the midfield…Ranked first on the team in goals (17), shots (47), shots on goal (34) and second in draw controls (31)…Tallied three assists and totaled 20 points on the season…Posted season-high shots (7), shots on goal (5), goals (4), points (4), minutes (60), draw controls (7) and tallied a game winner in 11-9 win over Kutztown (4/17).

2020 (at Millersville):
Played and started in all seven games in the midfield for the Marauders before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic…Ranked first in goals (14), points (19), shots on goal (26), free position goals (4), second in shots (33) and third in assists (5)…Held a .963 shots on goal percentage…Named PSAC Scholar-Athlete.

2019 (at Millersville):
Became the second player in program history to be named PSAC Freshman of the Year…Appeared in all 18 games and started in 15…Finished third on the team in draw controls (39), third in shot percentage (44.4), fourth in goals (24) and tied for fourth in points (31).

Background:
Competed in lacrosse, basketball and cross country…Led team to two division and district championships…Scored over 100 career goals and totaled 94 draw controls…Named all-area first team, Frontier Division First Team, Mercury All-Area First Team Midfielder and team MVP during senior season while also serving as captain…Received Frontier Division First Team honors as a junior and second team honors as a sophomore…Named Mercury All-Area Second Team Midfielder and received lacrosse coach’s award as a junior…Named cross country team MVP as a senior.

2020 (at Delaware)
Saw action in two games before season was cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic … Recorded one caused turnover at George Mason (Feb. 19).

2019 (at Delaware)
Appeared in 11 games as a rookie … Made collegiate debut against No. 10 Penn (Feb. 16) … Posted first-career goal in win over George Mason (March 13) … Finished year with one goal, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
