Springfield-Delco boys’ lacrosse coach and Assistant Athletic Director Tom Lemieux announced today that the school will host a marquee Division I men’s collegiate Fall Ball game when this year’s finalists, champion Maryland and Cornell, meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9.

Lemieux said the game is expected to draw several thousand fans.

Maryland defeated Cornell, 9-7, in May to cap a perfect 18-0 season. The game is the only Fall Ball contest for each team.

Lemieux said Springfield’s new complex was an ideal middle-ground meeting point for the two powers and will only help in exposure for the Philly region.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for our area,” said Lemieux. “For the Philly region to host a game of this magnitude is fantastic. We are looking forward to our community and surrounding communities to support such a great event.”

Maryland’s 2023 team features some key Philly players, including a Springfield-Delco grad, Honorable Mention All-American midfielder Kyle Long, who will use his fifth year COVD year; and senior First-Team AA Luke Wierman (Henderson). One of last year’s freshmen redshirts was attackman Eric Spanos, a Malvern Prep grad who was a Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year in 2021. One of Maryland’s top recruits in its incoming class is LSM/defenseman Will Schaller (Hill School).

Cornell also features some key players with Philly roots. Senior attackman Billy Coyle (Malvern Prep) and senior midfielder Aiden Blake (Haddonfield) are top returnees and sophomore midfielder Michael Bozzi (Haverford School) played in most games as a freshman. Two of Cornell’s new class include Charlie Box (Marple Newtown) and Griff McGovern (Salesianum).

More information on the event will be released in the coming weeks.
