Men’s lacrosse: Swarthmore topples Eastern

After falling behind early in the contest, the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team battled back to earn a 12-9 victory over host Eastern on Wednesday afternoon.

Led by four goals from Von Mabbs and three from Jackson Brosgol (5GB), the Garnet won their second straight game over a philly team (Widener was the first victim) to open the season. A second half offensive burst helped propel Swarthmore to victory over the Eagles.


  • The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Mabbs ended the run with 1:04 remaining in the first as he notched his fourth goal of the season with the help of Brosgol.
  • Brosgol cut into the lead as he scored Swarthmore’s opening goal of the second quarter. The Garnet and Eagles each tallied a pair of goals as Swarthmore entered the half-time break down, 6-3.
  • The Garnet turned on the offensive jets in the third quarter. On a man-up opportunity, Carter Strauch opened the third frame with his fourth goal of the season. The sophomore’s goal started a run of five straight goals for Swarthmore. Mabbs added a pair of goals, while Brosgol and Quin Seivold each tallied a goal for the Garnet during the opening ten minutes of the third.
  • Seivold, Brosgol and Mabbs accounted for the three goals in the fourth quarter as the Garnet locked up the come from behind victory. Shane Nachshen picked up his first collegiate victory as he recorded eight saves in the cage.
  • Michael Hardiman and Danny Lowe each added a goal for the Garnet.

Nicholas Fanelli (Pennrdge) had five goals and Connor Killion had a goal and five assists for Eastern (0-2).

Elizabethtown 18, Arcadia 11

Owen Yake (Holy Ghost Prep) scored five goals, Micah Ballew (Easton) had four goals, Gavin Gismondi (West Deptford-NJ) added three goals and an assist, Nick Cost (Conestoga) had a goal and four assists and Riley Langen (Moravian Academy) had a goal and two assists for E-Town.

Arcadia (0-1) got three goals and an assist from Brian Albertson and three goals from James Barretta (Downingtown East).

Franklin & Marshall 19, DeSales 6

Blake Target (Penn Charter) had a goal, an assist and three groundballs and Sage Garito (Haverford School) posted seven saves for No. 9 F&M.

Albright 16, Gwynedd Mercy 11

First-year Jack Burke (Northern Burlington-NJ) and junior Jay Shifflet combined for 12 points on the evening to lead the Lions (1-3) to victory. Burke totaled seven points behind four goals and three assists and grabbed six ground balls. Shifflet added five points on four goals and one assist and a game-high seven ground balls.

Jason Eide finished with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) and a pair of ground balls while Cameron Ostroff (Brandywine-DE) totaled four points (2 goals, 2 assists) six ground balls, and two caused turnovers for Gwynedd (0-1).
