For the first time since 2011, the Delaware men’s lacrosse team has advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship game.

The No. 1 seeded Blue Hens (10-5) put on an impressive showing Thursday afternoon at Drexel that began with a 3-0 run and ended with a new CAA record for team points and goals in a 19-6 victory over the No. 4 seed Dragons (6-8).

Delaware faces second-seeded Towson for the CAA championship Saturday at Drexel (2 p.m.). Towson routed UMass, 18-10.

“Our face-off unit did an excellent job of executing the game plan. I give a ton of credit to Coach (Trey) Wilkes and Coach (Matt) Rewkowski) for managing the adjustments from the first time we played Drexel and that really allowed us to build some momentum,” said Blue Hens coach Ben DeLuca. “We were sharp. We shared the ball and played selfless ball on offensive end and it showed on the scoreboard. The mentality of anyone can score at any given point in time has been really critical and is something we’ve been trying to build from the beginning of the season and it paid off well today.”

Tye Kurtz returned to the city of Brotherly Love and wasted no time getting on the board as he scored 58 seconds into the game off a feed from JP Ward. After a Ward goal and a Mike Robinson score at the 7:46 mark in the first quarter, the Dragons called a timeout to try and cool the Blue Hens’ heels.

Robinson tacked on his second goal of the game in the second quarter when Bieda found him on the right side. Delaware held Drexel scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the game, as the Dragons scored their first goal with 11:55 remaining in the first half. With 7:47 on the clock, Robinson scored off his second feed of the day from Bieda to tally the first hat trick of the game. Nine seconds later, CAA Defensive Player of the Year Owen Grant charged down the field from 40 yards out to net his sixth goal of the season. It ended up being a five-goal second quarter to give the Blue Hens an 8-3 advantage at the half.

With an assist from Ward, Aidan Fritz kicked off the second-half scoring for Delaware. It stretched the Blue Hens lead to 14-3 before the Dragons were able to put out the fire. During the stretch four different Blue Hens razzled and dazzled on offense to give Delaware an 11-goal lead. Delaware scored eight consecutive goals before Drexel’s goal at the 3:39 mark in the third quarter stopped the scoring spree.

Delaware led Drexel 15-4 to start the fourth quarter. With his fourth assist of the day, Bieda found Robinson who scored his fifth goal of the game 25 seconds into the quarter. The Blue Hens outscored Drexel 4 to 2 in the final segment to clinch a spot in Saturday’s championship game and earn head coach Ben DeLuca his third 10-win season.

Drew Lenkaitis (Unionville) had a goal and an assist for the Hens.

“That was one of the most complete games I think our offense has played since I can remember. Everybody was contributing and that’s what we need to be successful,” said Robinson.

Delaware set or tied several CAA Tournament records. Robinson’s six goals and Ward’s eight points both tied CAA single-game records. The Blue Hens set a new team single-game record for goals with 19 and points with 32. They tied the single-game record for assists with 13.
