Colgate Men’s Lacrosse Coach Matt Karweck has announced seniors Thomas Colucci and Donny Gayhardt (Malvern Prep) to lead as captains for the 2023 season.

Donny Gayhardt

Gayhardt, a defenseman, earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors last season. Consistently assigned to the opposition’s top attacker, the senior ranked fifth on the team with 21 ground balls and second on the squad with eight caused turnovers. Gayhardt enters his senior year as the anchor to an stout Raiders defense allowing just 11.62 goals against average last season.

“Donny generates so much juice for our program,” said Coach Karweck. “His drive towards excellence and growth-mindset is truly special. I am so impressed with his love for this game, the love for his teammates, and the love for our program values.

“He is the kind of person that can see different perspectives, develops deep connections with his teammates, and leads with fire and passion. I am so proud to name Donny a captain for our program, and I am excited to watch his leadership style and hear his voice every day.”

Colucci (Seton Hall Prep, N.J.), a faceoff specialist, is coming off a junior season in which he ranked third in the Patriot League in ground balls per game (7.5) and faceoff percentage (.571). Colucci enters his senior campaign with nine points, 140 ground balls, and a .552 career faceoff percentage.

“Thomas is a fearless and dedicated leader”, said Coach Karweck. “He is one of the most competitive players on the field, with an uncanny ability to relate and inspire his teammates to be the best versions of themselves. Thomas is the kind of person that you look to when things are uncertain, the person that will challenge your limits, and the person that will pick you up when you need it. I am so proud to name Thomas a captain for our program, he truly embodies our core values (grit, growth, and gratitude) each and every day”.

Colgate returns 36 letterwinners next season, including seven players who started at least nine games last season.

“I’ll tell you what, you can already feel the energy with this team,” Karweck said. “We have such a great dynamic in our locker room right now. There is a large group of hungry young guys coming in, a core group of veterans that have played significant minutes for us in the middle, and excellent talent and senior leadership at the top. I cannot wait to see how hard this team wants to work, how dedicated they are to being the best versions of themselves, and how tight we can get as a team this fall.”
