The Albany FireWolves defeated the visiting Philadelphia Wings, 11-5, at the MVP Arena in Albany on Saturday evening, taking a big step toward an NLL playoff berth while dealing a big blow to the Wings’ chances.

Philadelphia had a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter, but Albany responded with nine straight goals en route to a key victory in its playoffs hopes.

The FireWolves are in the fifth spot in the Eastern standings at 8-9, tied with the Wings, and own the fourth seed as a wild card entry in the Western bracket. The Wings (8-9) would have clinched a playoff berth with a win.

The Wings close next Saturday at the Georgia Swarm. More details on the playoff picture will be available this week.

After exchanging empty possessions, Matt Rambo (2 goals, La Salle) opened the scoring with his first goal of the game. Following an illegal crosscheck penalty, Corey Small was able to capitalize on the advantage and notched another one for the Wings.

The FireWolves scored their first of the game as Joe Resetarits fired a dart into the back of the net. After a brief scoring drought by both sides, Kevin Crowley (1G, 1A, Fusion co-founder) added to the Wings lead.

Following a Wings penalty to open the second quarter, Ryan Benesch netted his first of the night, bringing Albany back within a goal. In less than a minute, Kyle Jackson got the goal right back for the Wings. After nearly eight scoreless minutes, Andrew Kew cut the Wings lead to 4-3 before the halftime break.

In the third period, Resetarits buried his second of the game as he collected a rebound and dove across the crease to tie the game at 4-4. Following over ten minutes without a goal, Adrian Sorichetti caught a lob in transition from Tony Malcom and took it all the way to give Albany its first lead.

Reilly O’Connor then gave Albany a two-goal advantage early in the fourth quarter. Less than a minute later, Resetarits completed his hat trick, pushing the FireWolves lead to three.

Albany then poured it on, scoring four more goals before the Wings finally scored the final tally.
