Radnor senior goalkeeper Abby Jansen set the tone for her team’s PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal Saturday with Owen J. Roberts with three saves before the Wildcats finally scored after 15 minutes of play at Coatesville High Saturday.
After giving up that goal, the Raiders countered with four scores before the halftime break and continued that offensive surge with three of the first four goals of the second half as they rolled to a 13-4 victory and earned a state semifinal match Tuesday vs. Central League rival Conestoga.
Jansen finished the first half with five saves and Elise Palmer took over in front of the cage for the second half and added four saves. Radnor also benefited from the defensive efforts of Sally Austen, Avery Ciatto, Julie Breedveld, Ellie Rinehart, Tellian Schwartz and Katie DeShan.
“The coaches knew that No. 11 (Alexa Vogelman) and No. 22 (Gabbi Koury) ran things for them,” said Ciatto, who is headed to the University of Pennsylvania. “So I had to stick with 11 and Ellie (Rinehart) stayed with 22. Everyone on defense tried to work together and support each other.”
That support limited Vogelman and Koury to one goal apiece while Tori DiCarlo fired in six goals and added three assists and Sheila Esgro added three goals for Radnor.
“We knew we had to move the ball and find the open cutters,” said DiCarlo, who will attend the United States Naval Academy. “We have 13 seniors, and many of us have played together for so long. We weren’t ready for this to be our last game and have the season end.”
DiCarlo noted that the Radnor defenders make things tough for the attack players at practice, helping them improve their skills.
“They helped us get ready for a game like this,” she said. “We saw what (Owen J. Roberts) liked to do and couldn’t let them get in there.”
Margaret Mooney scored once for Radnor and made her presence felt with five draw controls, including her 100th of the season.
“I know how we need to get the ball off draws because possession is so important,” said Mooney, a William & Mary commit. “That allows us to work on putting things together. We’ve been working since the beginning of the season on making states and then giving ourselves a chance to win the championship.
“Our attack players have worked hard on our plays, and our defense and our goalies have been the key to our success. We just want to keep winning.”
Radnor head coach Kristin Addis realizes that her team’s experience has been a big plus.
“With 13 seniors, we feel we are ready for the big games we have to play,” she said. “The good thing is that we’re still talking about having practice and getting ready for the next game.”
