Penn Charter’s Antonio DeMarco said playing with Malvern Prep players is surely better than playing against them. He learned that again Saturday night in the annual Under Armour Senior All-America Game at Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Field in Baltimore.

DeMarco and four Friars – Eric Spanos, Will Peden, Pup Buono and Jake Brownley – helped the South outscore the North, 28-22, in an offensive explosion that was befitting of the top senior players in the country.

“Having them on my side was nice,” said DeMarco. “We had Will (Peden) and Eric (Spanos) scoring 20 goals in our faces too often. Having them on my side was great. We’re all good friends and being on the field to celebrate with them was nice. We also hung out together.”

DeMarco, a North Carolina signee, scored three goals and had three groundballs. And all four Malvern Prep grads played key roles in the win. Spanos (Maryland) had two goals, an assist and a groundball, Peden (Penn State) had a goal, defenseman Buono (Penn State) had a goal, two groundballs and a caused turnover and defenseman Brownley (Harvard) had one groundball.

DeMarco, a midfielder and one of eight UNC signees in the game, said the speed of the game was exceptional.

“It was awesome,” said DeMarco, affectionately known as Tone. “Honestly, (compared) to high school it was a lot faster. Even at practice, the speed was amazing. Kids were so skilled and everyone was getting looks. I think I kind of just went with the flow; really everyone adapted pretty well.

“Everyone was getting touches and it was really cool, the up-and-down play. It was especially cool playing with future (UNC) teammates. That was one of the best parts of it. I had three future teammates on my team and four on the other team and we were talking to each other the whole time. I was guarding them or they were guarding me almost the whole game.”

DeMarco’s game spoke for itself, but his long locks made his hair another hot topic on the ESPNU telecast. Famed announcers Quint Kessenich and Paul Carcaterra noted his long hair and asked to get a sideline interview during the game.

“I came off after a goal and one of the (ESPN reporters) came up to me and said Carc and Quint were dying to interview me about my hair,” DeMarco said. “She said, ‘Could they interview you with your helmet off? The guys want to know, if you condition your hair.’

“I had no idea what to say so I said, ‘Yeah once a week.’ They were asking about UNC and I said I was most excited about the new guys I will be playing with and getting into a new class with a new start.”

DeMarco said, though, that is concerned he may need to shave his head when he arrives at Chapel Hill on Aug. 12 for his first day as a freshman.

“The UNC kids shave their heads freshman year,” he said, holding back his horror. “I don’t know. I talked to (Dave) Metzbower (associate head coach and former Malvern Prep coach) and he said (head coach Joe) Breschi loves my hair and that I have to keep my hair. He said he doesn’t think he wants you to shave your hair. I am OK with taking off a little bit but I am not shaving it.”
