Led offensively by a career high day from Eric Overbay, Villanova (2-1, 2-1) picked up its second conference win today with an 11-8 Big East win at Providence.
Overbay finished with a game high six points while Keegan Khan finished with five. Will Vitton got the win in goal and finished with 16 saves, with six of those coming in the third quarter. Justin Coppola was 11-of-20 at the faceoff x and had three ground balls. Patrick Kennedy finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Also having two caused turnovers on the day were Owen Prybylski and Owen Hunt.
Villanova’s offense came out strong scoring the first two goals in the opening minutes. Khan set up Patrick Daly for the first and then Khan netted an unassisted goal after to put Villanova up 2-0. Khan would net one more in the quarter and the Friars would score two to make it 3-2 Wildcats.
Matt Campbell opened the second quarter with a goal and then Khan scored a man up on a pass from Daly to put Villanova up 5-2 at that 12:18 mark. Ryan Zimmerman scored back-to-back goals for the Friars making the score at the half 5-4 Villanova.
Overbay scored two goals at the start of the second half, his second was assisted by Campbell, and the Corey McManus netted his first of the day to put Villanova up four. After two goals by Providence Overbay set up Colin Crowley for the last goal of the third quarter to put Villanova up 9-6.
Providence scored the first two goals of the final quarter with just under six minutes to play but Overbay would set up Campbell for a goal at the 3:42 mark and then net his own to make the final 11-8.
