North Carolina senior attacker Scottie Rose Growney (Conestoga) was named the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while UNC senior defender Emma Trenchard claimed ACC Defensive Player of the Week laurels in the latest set of ACC weekly honors for the 2021 season announced Tuesday.
A native of Berwyn, Growney scored seven goals on 12 shots as UNC rolled past No. 8 Florida (11-5) and High Point (19-5) last weekend. She scored four goals, including two in each half, Friday against Florida. She scored two of her goals during a key 5-1 second-half run as UNC pulled away from a one-goal lead and put the game out of reach. She added three goals, two assists and a draw control Sunday against HPU.
Trenchard was solid across the field in UNC’s weekend wins. On Friday against Florida, she marked first-team All-American Shannon Kavanagh, limiting the senior to just one goal while also forcing a turnover. On Sunday against High Point, she initiated the UNC attack on a pair of fast breaks and recorded two assists (she had one career assist entering the game). She also added two ground balls and a draw control.
All eight ACC women’s lacrosse teams are ranked this week in the IWLCA poll: North Carolina (1), Syracuse (2), Notre Dame (3), Virginia (9), Duke (11), Boston College (13), Virginia Tech (16) and Louisville (23). BC opens its 2021 season Tuesday with a 4 p.m. home game against Albany. ACC Network features a tripleheader of ACC women’s lacrosse games on Friday with Southern California-Boston College at 12:30 p.m., Duke-North Carolina at 6 p.m. and Oregon-Notre Dame at 8 p.m.
