From Press Release
Redshirt junior Jakob Phaup (Souderton) dominated at the faceoff X Saturday night to lead Syracuse to a shocking 20-10 rout of No. 3 Virginia at the Carrier Dome.
No. 10 Syracuse – coming off a painful 18-11 loss to Army in its opener – moved to 1-1 and 1-0 in the ACC on the year, while the No. 3 Cavaliers fell to 3-1, 0-1 ACC.
Phaup won 22-of-33 faceoffs in the win, easily outplaying UVA standout Petey LaSalla.
“Obviously after last week it was great to come out and have a whole team effort,” said Syracuse coach John Desko. “I thought the guys did a great job making adjustments and the coaches did a great job preparing them. The game starts with the faceoff and I thought Jakob Phaup did an outstanding job.”
The Orange scored the final two goals of the first half to seize a 9-7 lead and then used a 7-0 run to close out the game. Jacob Buttermore (Garnet Valley) added two groundballs for Syracuse. Phaup – who is now 39 of 61 at the X this year – took every faceoff for ‘Cuse.
For UVA, Matt Moore (Garnet Valley) had an assist and three groundballs, Peter Garno (Haverford School) had a groundball and a caused turnover and Dox Aitken (Haverford School) added a groundball while Gavin Tygh (Penn Charter) lost two faceoffs.
