The Drexel women’s lacrosse team lost a tough 16-13 battle with Rutgers University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Dragons closed out a historic 2021 season with a 13-3 record and their first program appearance in both the CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament.
Drexel’s 13-3 record marks the most wins in a single season in program history.
HIGHLIGHTS
- With her five draw controls on the day, Karson Harris broke the record for most draw controls in a single season (90), which she previously set in the 2019 season.
- Courtney Dietzel (Central Bucks South) and Grady notched a team high five points against the Scarlet Knights; Dietzel sank three goals and had two assists while Grady tallied one goal and four assists.
- Harris, Dietzel and Lucy Schneidereith led the Dragons scoring with three goals apiece. Harris had her 14th hat trick this season while Schneidereith notched her 12th.
- Harris’ hat trick performance moves her within two goals of being the second highest goal scorer in program history.
- Grady’s four assists against the Scarlet Knights marked the fourth time this season that she has recorded four or more assists in a game.
- Corinne Bednarik (Downingtown West) led the Dragons on the draw, taking a career high seven draw controls against Rutgers.
- Zoe Bennett recorded double digit saves for the eighth time this season, stopping 11 against the Scarlet Knights offense.
OVERVIEW
- Rutgers opened the day with the first goal of the game to take an early lead.
- Lucy Schneidereith and Harris gave Drexel the offensive one-two punch they needed to take the lead, scoring goals within 20 seconds of one another.
- The Dragons and the Scarlet Knights continued to exchange goals, fighting to a tie three separate times in the first 10 minutes.
- With the game tied at two, Dietzel notched the go-ahead goal on an unassisted attempt. The Scarlet Knights answered back with two goals of their own but Colleen Grady then tied the game at four with a free position goal, her first of the day.
- Harris put the Dragons ahead once more with a her second goal of the day. Both teams battled for the lead for the next five minutes before Cara Moreau caught fire, tallying a pair of goals to give Drexel their largest lead of the day.
- The Dragons took a one goal lead into the half, but the Scarlet Knights tied the game at seven to open the second. Harris swung the momentum back in Drexel’s direction with her third goal of the day at 25:40.
- The Scarlet Knights offense went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 lead in the 20th minute. The Dragons offense capitalized on the next possession with a top shelf rocket from Dietzel on an assist from Grady to move the Dragons back within two.
- Lucy Schneidereith and Bednarik kept the Dragons in the hunt, capitalizing on back-to-back opportunities before the Scarlet Knights sank a pair of their own. Schneidereith stepped up to the plate again, grabbing a loose ground ball at the 50-yard line and racing to a one-on-one breakaway goal for her third of the day.
- Despite a strong effort, the Dragons couldn’t gain enough momentum heading into the final minutes to regain the lead, and fell to the Scarlet Knights 16-13.
