Villanova went into Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon and left with a 12-9 upset victory over No. 16 Navy.
Junior attack Brittany Bruno had a team-high three goals and an assist in the contest, while two other Wildcats, Ashley Lynch and Libby McKenna, tallied two goals apiece. Lynch also had two assists.
Villanova controlled the game in almost every statistical category, outshooting the Midshipmen 36-32, collecting 22 ground balls to Navy’s 17 and winning the draw control 14-9.
The Wildcat offense got started early, with freshman Catherine Field, Lynch and Bruno scoring in the first five minutes of play to put Villanova up 3-1.
Lynch and Bruno each scored once more in the first half, while Julianne Puckette (Radnor) also got two goals past Navy goalkeeper Abbi Young. Puckette, a junior transfer from Lehigh, now has seven goals three games into her first season with Villanova.
Senior Katie Comerford scored the last goal of the half into an empty net with one second remaining after Young fouled her. Villanova went into the break with a 9-5 advantage.
With that goal, Comerford set a new program record for career points at 184, passing former Wildcat Shannon O’Neil who had held the record with 183 points since 1997.
Senior Liz Trojan, McKenna and Bruno scored Villanova’s three goals in the second half, completing the upset over the Midshipmen.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Moro earned her second win of the season, making 12 key saves to keep Navy off the board.
This was the eighth meeting between the two schools. The Wildcat’s win broke a five-game losing streak to the Midshipmen that dates back to 2014.
