Boys’ notebook: Upper Dublin endured up-and-down season to reach the top again

Upper Dublin has endured a roller-coaster season – but Thursday the Cardinals reached the summit.
Behind a five-goal outburst by Jimmy Trentini, host Upper Dublin whipped Methacton, 15-6, to move into a first-place tie with the Warriors in the Suburban One American Conference race.
The win left both teams atop the conference with 11-2 records. Each has one more league game Tuesday; Methacton hosts Cheltenham (0-10) and Upper Dublin plays at Wissahickon (7-5).
Methacton had defeated the defending champion Cards, 12-7, when the teams first met April 16. A win last week would have given the Warriors their first league crown ever.
This time, though, UD coach Jon Levine said his team played smart.
5/12/09- Boys’ wrap: Unionville topples Penncrest, 13-7, in District 1 playoffs; L. Merion, WC East win

Grady Stevens and Richard Kaiser each scored three goals and Mike Nowoswiat and Nick Bacci each added a pair as host Unionville defeated Penncrest, 13-7, today in the first round of the District 1 boys’ lacrosse tournament.
The 12th-seeded Indians (12-4) advance to a second-round game Thursday vs. the winner of Central Bucks East- Neshaminy game.
Unionville led the entire game and was up 8-2 in the 3rd period before 21st-seeded Penncrest (9-9) mounted a comeback, scoring three times in the last two minutes of the period to draw to 8-5. But Unionville scored twice in the opening minute of the fourth period to retake control and secure the team’s first ever playoff win.
5/12/10 – Collegiate men: Cabrini advances in D3 tournament with 10-7 triumph over Denison

The 8th-ranked Cabrini men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Denison, 10-7, today to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The victory is the Cavaliers’ fourth all-time, including third in the last three seasons, in NCAA Tournament play.
Cabrini (15-3) will play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season and visits No. 1 Stevenson for the second consecutive year on Saturday, May 15. Game time against the Mustangs is to be announced.
Senior attackman and 2010 Tewaaraton Award candidate Casey Grugan (Ridley) and senior attackman Steve Kapp (La Salle) each tallied three points with two goals and one assist in the win. Kapp netted the eventual game-winning goal with 11:20 remaining in the third quarter.
5/12/11 – Boys’ lacrosse: Haverford School topples Moorestown (N.J., 11-1), to close perfect regular season (20-0)

Haverford School closed a memorable regular season at 20-0 today by coasting to an 11-1 non-league victory over visiting Moorestown (N.J.).
The Fords, who won the Inter-Ac League crown and remain as the top-ranked team in all three national polls as well as the PA Media Rankings, will surely be given the top seed in the Inter-Ac Invitational tonight at the seeding meeting.
Zach Rego led the Fords with three goals and two assists and Gavin McBride added two goals and one assist, while Henry Blynn had a goal and an assist. Six others scored once and Conor Kelly (eight saves) did not yield a goal in three periods.
5/12/12 – Friday’s boys’ high school highlights: Springfield-Delco tops UD in OT; Abington edges Garnet Valley

Face-off specialist Mark Gurenlian won 16 of 19 draws and scored the game-winning goal with one minute to play in overtime as Springfield-Delco defeated Upper Dublin, 8-7, Friday to close its regular season at 10-8.
Gurenlian actually lost the overtime face-off, but took a midfield clear and raced down to score the game-winner.
Lucas Spence and Steve Halko each scored twice for the Cougars.
Leighton Young led the Cards with three goals.
Abington 9, Garnet Valley 8
The host Ghosts won a key non-league game for District 1 seeding, finishing their regular season at 13-5. The Jags also finished at 13-5.
5/12/13 – NCAA men’s playoffs: Philly grads help Dickinson, Lynchburg advance in Division III

Matt Cherry (Radnor) had two goals and three assists while Tyler White (Penn Charter) had two goals and four groundballs as the No.2-ranked Dickinson men’s lacrosse team routed visiting Adrian College, 20-7, Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday.
Will Scott (Emmaus) added a goal for the Red Devils, who improved to 18-0.
The Red Devils advance to the quarterfinals to host Salisbury University on Wednesday. Opening face-off is currently scheduled for 4:00 pm.

The District 1 tournament opens Tuesday with 13 games. Three teams – No. 4 Penncrest (top seed), No. 5 Bishop Shanahan (second seed) and No. 9 Radnor (third seed) received first-round byes.
1. Malvern Prep (21-0) Prev: No. 1- The top-seeded and Inter-Ac League champion Friars host the Hill School-Hun School winner in the quarterfinals of the Inter-Ac Invitational on Wednesday.
2. Haverford School (18-5) Prev: No. 2- The second-seeded Fords host the winner of Springside Chestnut Hill and Academy of the New Church in the quarterfinals of the Inter-Ac Invitational on Wednesday.
3. Salesianum School (12-1) Prev: No. 3- The Sals close their regular season today vs. Cape Henlopen
4. Penncrest (18-0) Prev: No. 4- The top-seeded Lions have a first-round bye in districts.

Zack Augustine had three goals and an assist and Andrew Spencer posted seven saves for a rare shutout as visiting Avon Grove clinched an outright Ches-Mont League championship tonight with a 10-0 win over West Chester East.
The Devils (15-1) finished 10-0 in the league and will receive either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the District 1 tournament, which uses the LaxPower Rankings to determine seeding.
West Chester East closed at a solid 7-3 in the Ches-Mont and 13-5 overall.
Doug Jones had two goals and an assist and Jake Smith scored twice for Avon Grove, which won its final 15 games after opening with a loss to Spring-Ford. Brendan Harmon and Robert Amanto each had a goal and two assists and Carson Peck scored once.
5/12/17 – Hatboro-Horsham tops Souderton to win outright Suburban One American Conference crown

Hatboro-Horsham senior face-off specialist Brian Hood admitted his Hatters did not play their best in the first half of Thursday’s game at Souderton despite knowing an undefeated conference championship was at stake.
But at halftime – with the Hatters trailing, 6-4 – the coaches got their points through.
“In all honestly, it was the coaches,” said Hood. “We were successful because of them. We came out thinking that it was going to be a completely different game and an easy win.
“But at half the coaches sat us down and called us out on what we needed to do. They fueled us for the win. They flipped the switch for us and everyone woke up and remembered how much that game meant to us.”

Amherst junior attackman Evan Wolf (Lower Merion, Duke’s LC) has been selected as the NESCAC Player of the Year as voted on by the league’s coaches.
Wolf, who also earns First Team honors at attack and earned All-NESCAC Second Team honors last season, ranked second in the conference in scoring with 84 points and has netted a league-leading 53 goals. He is the third Mammoth to garner the Player of the Year honor, joining Quinn Moroney (2015) and Derek Cherney (2007).
Wolf led Amherst, the No. 2 seed, into the semifinals of the NESCAC Championships.
5/12/19 – NCAA men’s D1: Moore, Schwenk, Aitken, Conner lead UVA; McNulty sparks Loyola to win

The No. 3 national seeded Virginia Cavaliers (14-3) upended the Robert Morris Colonials (9-8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night, 19-10, at Klöckner Stadium. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cavaliers in the NCAA Tournament, their longest in program history.
Matt Moore (Garnet Valley) had two goals and a career-high seven assists and Justin Schwenk (Spring-Ford) came off the bench to win 22 of 28 faceoffs. Also, Dox Aitken (Haverford School) scored twice and Jeff Conner (Strath Haven) added two assists for the Cavs.
The Cavaliers received career nights from Mikey Herring and Ryan Conrad, two seniors playing their final career games at Klöckner Stadium. Herring scored a career-high six goals and Conrad scored a career-high five goals, as the duo was responsible for 11 of UVA’s 19 goals. Matt Moore also added a career-high seven assists and a career-high nine points.
Matt Schmidt (Central Bucks East) had two goals and two assists for Robert Morris and defenseman and fellow co-captain Mike Eveland had one caused turnover for RMU.
