Team Philly had suffered two lopsided defeats to mighty CONNY in the round robin games Thursday at the All America Underclass East Super Regional at MapleZone.
But there was Philly, with only 3 minutes to play, taking a 12-11 lead over CONNY Friday in the title game. CONNY (5-0) regrouped and won, 13-12, but Team Philly coach Noelle Powell was proud of her team for playing CONNY even the entire game and putting itself in position to win.
“We played a heck of a game,” said Powell. “CONNY was an extremely talented and cohesive team this year. We took two hard losses against them yesterday, 9-4 and 11-4. They dominated the draw and ran fresh legs on us in Day 1.
“We needed to step up to the challenge. Over the course of Day 1 we found rotations that were successful and had a chance to run through them in our first game against New Jersey.”
In that play-in game against New Jersey earlier Friday, Team Philly rolled, 16-7. Against CONNY (5-0 overall), Team Philly never trailed by more than 2 goals and had late leads of 11-10 and 12-11.
Also, four Philly members were named All-Tourney, midfielder Gabby Koury (Owen J Roberts); defender Sarah Gowman (Twin Valley); midfielder Bella Schaffer (Haverford High); and defender Lydia Colasante (Tatnall School-DE).
“It was a great team effort – we responded with some tactical play and a whole lot of grit on the draw to even the playing field,” Powell said. “Lydia Colasante did a phenomenal job holding (standout Chloe) Humphrey in check – neutralizing their offense. Our goalies were absolutely solid between the pipes and everyone contributed.
“Overall we played with poise under pressure and I am proud of the team. I am sure that if we had an extra minute on that clock, things could have ended very differently.”
