Philly college standouts: Moore (@gvjagslax) leads UVA; many from region spark Monmouth

Matt Moore (Garnet Valley) collected three goals, two assists and two groundballs to spark defending NCAA champion Virginia to a 12-9 victory over visiting Loyola today in a battle of top-ranked teams making their season opener.

Dox Aitken (Haverford School) had a goal, an assist, a caused turnover and four groundballs for the Cavaliers while Peter Garno (Haverford School) scored once and Jeff Conner (Strath Haven) had two assists and a groundball.

LSM Ryan McNulty (Bishop Shanahan) had two CTs and a GB for Loyola.

Monmouth 11, NJIT 8

Senior defenseman Dillon Smart (Garnet Valley) collected eight groundballs, three caused turnovers and an assist while Cade Stratton (Ridley) had two goals and one assist, Brock Anderson (Ridley) scored twice, Scooter Whiteside (Avon Grove) had five groundballs and two CTs, Conor Tuturice (Easton) had three GBs, Chris Hervada (Haverford School) had two GBs and two CTs, Matt Soutar (Lenape) won 5 of 11 faceoffs and Ethan Masucci (La Salle) scored once for Monmouth.

Colton Johnson (Episcopal Academy) had a goal and two assists for NJIT.

Maryland 14, Richmond 13, 2OT

Tate Gallagher (Shipley) had two goals and two assists for the Spiders in a heartbreaking loss. Lehigh transfer Joel Trucksess (Haverford School) won 8 of 19 FO for the winning Terps.

UNC 14, Mercer 6

Caton Johnson (Manheim Twp) made 5 saves for the win in the cage for the Tar Heels.

Ohio State 11, BU 4

Ryan Terefenko (Wilson) had four GBs and two assists for OSU. Sean Christman (Malvern Prep) won 15 of 18 faceoffs for the Terriers, many over former Inter-Ac rival Christian Feliziani (Episcopal Academy).

Johns Hopkins 15, Towson 7

Forry Smith (Haverford School) had a goal and an assist, Kyle Prouty (New Egypt-NJ) won 14 of 19 faceoffs and Brett Baskin (La Salle) scored once for JHU.

Women

UNC 15, James Madison 7

Scottie Rose Growney (Conestoga) had three goals and four draw controls for the Heels. Daria Lucchesi (Methacton) had a goal and an assist for JMU.

Coastal Carolina 12, Old Dominion 8

Megan Bozzi (Mainland Regional-NJ) had three goals and an assist, Megan Kilpatrick (Camden Catholic-NJ) had two goals and Hannah Close (Unionville) scored once for CC.

Syracuse 21, Canisius 6 (Friday)

Sam Swart (Archbishop Carroll) had a goal and three assists for the Orange.
